  1. I am using Pinnacle 7 and it can capture from my JVC digital camera through the IEEE port.
    I can capture fine.

However, I noticed today that when I capture TV program using VirtualDUB, it was way better than using ATI MMC 7.5. No blockiness etc.

But when i set VirtualDub to look at the IEEE port, its not displaying the movie from my digital camera.

So i guess this is not supported otr i am doing something wrong/

  2. Most programs do not support the IEEE port, the only program i'm familiar with is the Adobe Premiere 6.0, maybe in future versions we will get better support for the new FireWire devices.

  3. I don't believe you will get better quality, so I would just use Pinnacle 7. When you using a DV cam your not really capturing. The video is already digital, you are merely tranfering the data from the camcorder to the HD.

  4. Tommy, Pinnacle also converts it to mpeg. It may capture it digitally but its capacity to convert to VCD also is important.

I have tried it many times...it captured perfectly but when converted to mpegs (for Video CDS), I notice some blockiness in the movie which is pretty much the same as my capture quality in ATI ALl in Wonder, which i recently realized VirtualDUb does an excellent capture. That is why I thought VirtualDub could capture from IEEE as well

  5. I use Sceneanalyzer to capture DV via my firewire. Works better that Pinnacle (no dropped frames) and is only $33. I have JVC miniDV.

Download the demo to check compatibility.

  6. Pinnacle doesnt drop frames either.

I am talking abt the quality of the converted video to mpeg

  7. Its true that Pinnacle doesn't do the greatest dv to mpeg conversion. Why don't you just use pinnacle for the catpture and use vdub (or another program) for the processing? I believe thats what many people here do. I personally do not use the pinnacle software to compress to vcd. I'll use it to "capture" and to edit once in a while but in the end I use tpmg to compress.

  8. MMMM thats a good idea Tommy. I didnt know you can do that.

However in Pinnacle, it captures movie in very low quality just for editing and then recapture it digitally when editing's all done.

Where do i go from there? How can i use tmpgenc? Is there a way I can save the captured dv in Pinnacle?

You can also use Vegas Video from http://sonicfoundry.com and that will export to Mpeg 1 or 2

  10. You don't have to capture the video in the lower quality. If you do after you finish editing why not just export to avi? Or just capture in full quality. If your using win 9x you might not want to export to avi as it will create a very large file.

The captured file is already saved on your computer, however if you used the lower quality mode it probably won't do you any good. Its in the pinnicle directory somewhere, I think under Movies. Not really sure I would have to check.

Also AVI IO (which is located in the tools section) will capture DV from a ieee.

This thread ended way back in February, but I was not fully satisfied with the result. So, for those who may ever ask the same question, let me add some remarks about this topic.

With Pinnacle Studio 7 you can capture in either preview mode or full mode.
    - In preview mode you'll get an AVI-file with just enough resolution to let you edit the video. When you are finished you can start Make video or Make film (sorry, don't have the software here). It will ask you to connect your camera and will capture all scenes in full mode that have to appear on your resulting video.
    - In full mode you'll get just a dump of the DV-info on the tape. You can either edit this and produce a modified AVI in full mode that can be encoded with for instance Tmpgenc, or you can produce a mpg-file using the Studio 7 tool itself, although most people aren't satisfied with the resulting quality.

Indeed with Win9xME environments, you have to create chunks of 4Gb, because of the filesize limit.

The correct URL for Scenalyzer is http://scenalyzer.com/main.html just in case anybody was wondering. (I sure was until I found it!)
