  1. Hi,

I finally succeeded in wrîting a SVCD (480x576@2520) with decent picture quality, no blocks in the critical scenes.
Now I'm left with a basic qustion :

Is it possible to display 4:3 from SVCD ? It seems VCD is by default showing as 4:3, SVCD is showing like 16:9 on my TV set. On my PC it's showing OK.

I guess it has something to do with the info files in the SVCD directorys on the disk, is it possible to change this somewhere or is this something I have to live with ?

A possible solution would be to shoot my video in 16:9 but then I'm throwing away a lot of pxls in the original (miniDV).

Please let me know if some of you have bypassed this problem.

    My software/hardware config :
    SONY PC100 MiniDV > IEEE1394 (Ulead Media6.0) > Vdub frameserving to TMPGEnc 2.02 > Ulead DVD Moviefactory > Pioneer DV444 player.

I wasted a lot of time (nearly 2 months) in creating good SVCD's, I'm more than happy to give people advise if they start of with PAL DV footage.

Thanks to all the people/input I found on this forum.

    Greets,
    Glenn

  3. Waw, thx for the usefull info. I know that you can set aspe4ct ratios in Tmpgenc, you can also set them in Vdub ... but that was not the question. The question is if SVCD will always be displayed as 16:9 on my TV set ? I tried setting aspect ratio to 4:3 (or close) to that but when played from stan^-alone player, I always get 16:9 in the TV. Is this normal ? It's not a setting from my DVD player ... in case someone comes up with that advise

  4. What is your source material's aspect ratio? SVCD can be 4:3 easily. Also could be your standalone player, some setting in it or even how you burned the SVCD. Alittle more info would be helpful.

I'm not sure that this is the answer you need, but let me share:

I've found on my 444, if I've made the SVCD 16:9 format I need to set the 444 to 4:3 Pan/Scan mode in order to display correctly. Mine still does show some black bars top and bottom, but not quite as big as when I'm playing a 16:9 DVD.

This info is only from "backed up" DVDs. Anything that I've run from my DV Cam (BTW...same setup as you...PC100 to MS Pro, etc.) I usually burn to DVD.

  6. I ave the same exact problem; I use same softwares, same source (DV) and same player ! I think this is a player issue because on my previous player (Olidata 1999e) not find this problem....
Sorry Glenndv you say "with decent picture quality, no blocks in the critical scenes" I are very happy, if this is possible, to send me the TmpGenc template for convert our AVI (DV) to MPEG (SVCD standard). I spent more months to find best solution to produce a "decent" SVCD without success Why you use "Vdub frameserving" ? This improve quality of captured videos ?
    Many Thanks

    Glenn,
You're about 6 months ahead of me, and I'm getting up to the 2 months of trying to get all this stuff to work. Did you try to compare the DV original to the SCVD copy? Could you see a difference?
What settings did you use in TMPGEnc?

    Thanks,
    David M
