  1. Finally found a laserdisc to play my old discs and thought about putting them onto dvd. I can capture them via an analog/dig converter into premiere, encode with cce and author with sonic pe and burn. Question is, do I burn to dvd or svcd? I know I can experiment but thought someone could save me the time. Also , can I expect a good quality transfer and what if any encoder settings do you suggest? Thanks.

  2. I've put a lot of my LDs on SVCD. But as soon as I get a DVD burner I'll be using DVD. You don't have to change discs with DVD and they play on more machines.

Resolution of LD is about what SVCD is so I'd guess that wouldn't be an issue.

I use AVI_IO to capture to AVI. It doesn't drop frames and works well with up to 720x480(576) (although I'm not sure S-video is capable of that resolution). I use either 480x480 (or 480x576 if I'm out of Canada).

Then with VirtualDub I put all the AVIs I've captured together (each AVI is one side of LD). I use the frameserving function of VirtualDub and feed it to TMPGEnc for rendering to SVCD. Although usually one side of LD makes one SVCD if I play with the bitrates.

You might want to read the guide on this site about making CVD. I don't think the slight reduction of resolution would make a difference coming from LD. and it's a DVD compatible format.
