  1. I mostly capture from DVDs, The method I use is to use my ATI TV wonder (composite video from DVD player) to capture MP2 at a high bit rate and convert to VCD using Flask and Panasonic plugin. I'm quite happy with the results, but would I get better results converting directly from DVD ROM?

    Yes sir.

    THe quality drops slightly when it is converted from Digital to Anaglog and then back to digital.

    If you rip a DVD, their is no quality loss and much less when you encode to VCD or SVCD.

    Also, DVD-ROM is easier to hack.

    The major benefit of owning a DVD-ROM is:
    it takes two hours to capture a two-hour movie;
    it takes fifteen minutes to rip a two-hour movie.
