Can the drive be removed from the firewire housing?
If so, then connect to an IDE channel and update.

This is purely guesswork, and as such simply an idea.

Simply remove the drive from the housing, connect it to the secondary IDE channel using an IDE cable (disconnect any other drives on that channel) and re-boot.

I didn't even physically install the drive in my case. Just sat it on the floor and connected both cables (IDE and power).

Then ran the firmware update and it found my drive.
