I downloaded an avi that, when I bring it up in TMPGEnc, it says it is a PAL. I want to play it on NTSC. When converted, it doesn't seem to be jerky (then again, I have nothing to compare to, this is my first). I read the "frame rate conversion" guide, but do I really need to do it? How do I tell if the video source REALLY is PAL? Also, what would be the correct fps for NTSC. I have read 29.97 and I have seen 23.37. I need a good opinion...

you'd know if it was jerky.
have you tried encoding as PAL and playing it on your standalone?
I have no problems playing PAL discs on my Pioneer and crappy old TV
give it a shot...it's nice not to have to mess around with framerate conversion. and by the way, open the avi in virtualdub, and go file-->file information
that will tell you the framerate
what are you askin' me for...
    I'm an idiot!
