  1. I like the idea of making CVD resolution files for CDR now & no conversion to DVD when I get a DVD-R. Here are my trials & I'd appreciate feedback.

I have downloaded the CVD file from vhelp's site. His clip is basically the TMPGenc SVCD template with the following changes:
    CQ mn600/mx1850 bitrate / 352x480 / 160 audio 48k / vbv:112

I have converted the Episode 2 high quality trailer to CVD with the following settings:
    VBR 1600 min/2520 ave/2520 max 352x480 NTSC Audio 48k 224kbs

I had tried 384 kbs audio but was getting some skipping in one player - more below.

Burned with Nero, SVCD template, turn off compliant CD

I tried it in our 3 players with following results:
APEX 1500: played everything perfectly (no surprise)
Audiovox 1680 portable (DVD/SVCD/VCD/CVD/MP3/CD): good, audio skips a bit
Philips 711: Won't play any of it

Since the Philips is European & wasn't a CVD member this isn't surprising.

    Questions (vhelp, SatStorm, & all):

    1) Is there other settings to make the CVD video work in non-asian players with CD media?

    2) What are the best settings - there is no TMPGenc template on the site - I am not a newbie & believe I have everything right but am unsure about the audio bitrate that may be best. Clues?

Can we lobby Ahead & TMPGenc.net to add CVD support/templates to their products?

Thanks all. If I can get things settled down I'll attempt to add CVD goodies to my website for others. The Kitty

The CVD thing, is basicly for the Video part (the m2v from the mpeg 2).

Something no one seems to follow:
First, test if your standalone supports 48Khz audio on CD media.
If not, then do typical CVDs
    That means 352 X 576/480 with 44100Khz Audio!

Many problems are because of this: 48000khz ain't a standard for any CD based format! Some players handle it, but not all!

So, try again, with TRUE CVD audio specifications!

  3. Thanks SatStorm - the 44.1 KHz audio does allow it to play on the Philips 711 as well as the less tolerant players.

I am still having an audio problem. At 224kbs the audio hesitates every now & then. I lowered it to 160kbs which helps a bit and if I lower the VBR to 1200/2400/2520 it only jumps a bit but I am starting to sacrifice video quality for audio - is there another way to get the audio to decode smoothly? A setting I am missing?

    Thanks, Da Kitty

    Hmmmm......

Try an imager.... VCD imager for example.

In theory, a CVD with 1200min/2300average and 2520max gonna produce SVCD quality.
There are some reports that if you low the max a bit (let say 2480) helps for such problems like yours
Anyway with philips' standalones, you must be really lucky in anything....
