  1. I'm always downloading clips from various car message boards with car races and such. The clips are in all different formats, sizes, etc.

I've been trying to burn them as a VCD with Nero with bad results. I've tried everything I could think of. I've burned a vcd with just one video that had no "conversion screen" pop up (when I dragged it over onto the compilation). And I've tried just throwing a bunch of movies onto a disc and clicking "re-encode the video file" for every video that had the screen pop up.

All of them BURN fine, but when I try to play them in my Sony DVD player (actual VCD movies I've burned work fine on the player), the player just sits there and reads the disc over and over and it eventually says "no disc" or something like that.

My question is... is there one simple thing that I may be doing wrong (ie, burning at too high a speed or not checking a certian box)? Or is this more trouble than it's worth (considering the fact that there are a lot of different types, formats, sizes, etc of video floating around)? I have not tried any of the conversion software or anything (don't have internet at home right now so I can't DL anything). I'm just wondering why Nero makes it seem so easy (it seems like it would just reencode the file for you and it would work fine) but it doesn't seem to be working.

Sorry for such a long post, and sorry if this kinda thing is asked a lot but I don't have a lot of time to sit here in the library. Hence why I can't sit here all day and search through this monster of a site.

    Thanks for reading! Much appreciated.

    Couple of pointers.

The most probable reason behind the "No Disc" error is that many Sony players have a lot of trouble reading CD-R. They do however seem to work OK with high quality CD-RW so try burning to a rewritable next time.

Secondly, you should really be doing your AVI -> MPEG conversion with a decent encoder such as TMPGEnc. Nero is great at burning but terrible at MPEG encoding.

BTW.. if you don't have internet access how did you post your message?

  3. At the library!

Thanks for the reply, I am using Office Depot CDs (supposed rebadged PNY discs) but I am burning at like 16x. Could that maybe be the problem? It's just weird because most actual VCD movies I've burned work fine (16x). :\

    Thanks!

burning speed shouldnt matter. dave b is right, you should use tmpgenc to convert avi files to mpegs. nero wasnt created iwth encoded with encoding in mind.

also, i too have some racing files that ive downloaded, and the quality is pretty crappy so dont expect it to be any better (but you can expect it to be worse)

  5. Thanks for the replies guys! So I can use that encoder for the files that are already MPEGs? Cause even when I try to burn just one MPEG file (one that doesn't say it had any errors or needs to convert or whatever) it STILL doesn't work.

So even these files would need to be converted even though no errors pop up when I drag them over onto the CD in Nero?

    Thanks again.

As Dave B said, its not the files, its the disks. Sony DVD`s don`t read CD-Rs, ONLY CD-RWs. I`ve havd 2 sony DVD players & neither would read a CDR, burn the same files to a RW disk & off it goes. Its only files that NERO wants to convert you should re-encode.

  7. Hmmm.... weird. I'll run out and buy a few CDRW discs then.

Oh, and not to be a pest, but how come VCD movies (full length, VCDs) work when burned on CDR? That's weird. I'm going to go buy some CDRWs and try them out. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

    I appreciate the replies! Thanks!
