  1. Hi,

I just got a dvd-rom today and after i installed it I downloaded powerdvd and it won't play. When I put the dvd in the drive the computer just sits there for about 30 seconds then comes up and says "No disc in drive E:"
My dvd-rom is drive e:. I have the dvd rom as a master and my cd-rw on as a slave. they are both on the same cord if that makes a difference.

I am running windows xp and the dvd-rom id a hitachi gd5000-pc 8x32x.

Oh i did try playing a regular cd-rom and the drive seems to read that fine. Is there some additional software i need to download that I am not aware of?

Any help at all would be great.
    Thanks,
    -Jovo

  2. Well, I can't tell anything from your "computer details" in your profile - you might want to take a minute and fill that out. At any rate, if it can read a CD-ROM, but not a DVD, I'd check this stuff:

    =================

Cannot play a DVD or CD in
the drive or certain types of
discs cannot be read in the
    drive.

    Problem:

    1) The disc is placed upside
    down in the disc tray.
    2) The disc is dirty.
    3) The pick-up lens is dirty.
    4) The disc is scratched or
    warped.
    5) The disc has a region
    code that cannot be
    played on the drive.

    Corrective action:

    1) Place the disc right side
    up.
    2) Clean the disc surface.
    3) Clean the pick-up lens.
    4) Change the disc.
    5) Refer to your system
    manual for help.

  3. Can you do a directory listing of the DVD by right clicking on the drive icon and "explore"-ing? If not, fill out that "computer details" thing and we'll see from there.

  4. I've tried numerous discs they aren't dirty

Anyway I filled out the computer details. I hope it helps.

I tired to explore the dvd and windows pops up saying to insert a disc into the drive. I put a cd in instead and i can explore that. I'm very confused.

    Search Comp PM
Go into control panel - system - hardware - click device manager and make sure the device is operating properly. Perhaps you didnt install the device drivers properly and xp is treating it as a cd-rom rather than a dvd rom?

  6. I went and did that. It's listed as a Hitachi dvd-rom gd-5000 under the dvd/cd-rom drives. When I checked the properties it says that the device is working properly.

Unfortunately I'm about to give up on it. I've tried to donwload every hitachi driver I could find, with no luck.

Any other suggestions woul be useful.

    Thanks,

  8. Yep, tried that too.

Do you think it is possible for the drive to be bad, even though it reads cd roms?
