You were told wrong. The time capacity of a DVD depends entirely on the encoding rate. Here are some examples:
5Mbps ~ 7,520 secs
4Mbps ~ 9,400 secs
3Mbps ~ 12,533 secs
2Mbps ~ 18,800 secs
So this guy is encoding at an average BR of around 2Mbps (around SVCD quality) to get the five hours on the disk.
To me, the quality would suck (compared to what it should be on a DVD) and would be a waste of (my) money. -
what is a good mbps, good to me is normal dvd or a bit better than vhs
-
Normal DVD rates are around 4.5-5Mbps (but very individualized). Quality is still quite good at rates around 3.5Mbps. I personally don't go below this.
VHS quality is essentially equal to VCD quality. -
ok i get it...so if its at 5 mbps it will look like a real dvd, its like 2 hours right?
-
Thats right a good DVD is recorded at 5000 bitrate your very great looking DVD's that are dual layered is more like 5500 to 7000, I have personally recorded at 10000 on my Panasonic DMR E-20 and its mind blowing the quality, but then again its only 1 hour, thats only good for family video's and material you want to edit on a Ram disc to cut scenes or remove commericals.
-
two things...
1) how do i edit out chamercials if i transfer it from my vcr to my pc
2) is it hard to set it to 10000 ( like do u need a special program) -
1)comercials can be edited out with a video editor program like Adobe Primiere (expensive) or VirtualDub (free).
2)No... all you need to do is put 10000 as the bitrate!
one more thing, if you want high quality then youll have to capture at high quality. if you converting from vhs then i dont really think 10000kbps is really necessary! you cant make crappy video better using a higher bitrate!
my system can barely capture at 2500kbps... -
so, if i want my video to look as best as it can on dvd what would be the bitrate
-
commercial dvd bit rate is usually 4.5 mbps (if you read the dvd specs you'll see that this is because they wanted 120mins per dvd (4.7gig))
10mbps is out of spec most players wont play that evan at 9mbps alot of players wont accept it.
if you are capturing from a vcr don't bother going over 4.5
btw 2mps will give you better than vhs quality if it's done right#videohelp on dalnet! -
so if i make a 5 hour vhs, and then put it onto dvd will it make a difference if i make it 2mbps or 4mbps or will the quality be al,ost the same
-
of course 4 mbps will be better. the higher the bit rate the better the quality(although most svcd is done around 2 and some of those look awesome) at 3 you might be able to fit your five hours on 2 dvds and still have a very decent image. instead of capturing it to vhs, capture straight to your comp every generation of transfer looses quality avoid the unessassary.
