any advantages using double cpu mobo than a single and powerfull cpu like pentium 4 or an amd xp?

I have a dual-processor board from Supermicro (P3DLE) with two PIII 800 MHz processors and 512Mb RDRAM on it.

On the plus side, I can say is that, during the encoding of a 2hrs 10min DVD to VCD with TMPGEnc, the encoding time went from 7hrs 10min to 4hrs 45mins when I turned on the "Use Multi-thread" option, which detected my 2 PIII processors;

On the negative side, some games would not run in this machine, although they ran perfectly on my other single-processor machine. I cannot guarantee the dual processor was the reason for them not running, but I can't see any other.

I'm not sure if double would help. At least I don't have complaints with my single. I have a AMD Athlon XP 1700+ 1.47Ghz with 512 SDRAM. To encode a 2hr 2min file it only took me about 1 hour 45 mins.

I had recently upgraded to a dual processor:

With my TMGEnc settings of 2 pass vbr - I get a 1.5x increase over a single processor. (Other people have posted that a 1 pass CQ benefits more from the dual).

I thought it was only me that had problems with dual processors. Since my upgrade, I have had more problems with games and other software. They had worked fine under Windows XP pro and a single processor. Now, with dual, I get random lockups and crashes. Part I can contribute to an internal dsl modem driver.

Since I had replaced alot of components in the upgrade: motherboard, memory, and cpu(s), I can't tell what is causing the other problems. Or even if XP doesn't work too well with dual or not.
