  1. hi !
I'm thinking of getting a DVD-burner. The specifications says it burns DVD+RW, but it says nothin about DVD+R. Does this burner burn DVD+R as well (like they didn't bother to write it), or isn't it? Is it so that they maybe don't know.
I also wonder... can this burner make DVD-R and DVD-RW. I read DVD+RW and +R was a newer technique, so I guess DVD-R and -RW is older, is it compatible to write those disc types ?

    Thanx for your help!

If it doesnt say dvd+r at all it probably doesnt support it cause the first dvd+rw writers didn't support it. And DVD+RW/+R do not support DVD-R/-RW, they are two competing standards. DVD-R/-RW are today a bit cheaper and the DVD-R disc are also cheaper.

    Yup,

The first run of DVD+RW drives don't support +R.....

I have the HP DVD-200i and it works great.
I haven't run into a player yet that hasn't read the disks I've created.

    Panasonic 31ku
Old Sony DVD 5.1 system with Stereo all in ONE unit. (doesn't read CD-R or CD-RW but reads DVD+R/RW perfectly.

    Another Old cheap Sony.
Every APEX and Dawoo my friends own.....

    So far no trouble...

  4. Thanx so much for the help...
Though I want you to take part of a line from the distributor of the product, it says:
"Today the community thinks this days DVD+RW writers will also be able to take DVD+R discs as well, but because the provider doesn't know, they doesn't write this in the specifications" (sorry for any bad translation)
What do you think this means ? Will the player be able to record DVD+R?

    Thanx so much!

1st generation DVD+RW writers were supposed to get a firmware update to support +R. However, this has proven impossible. The only way to get +R burning support is to buy a new drive that supports it.

eg. HP DVD-100i does not support +R burning and never will.
HP DVD-200i does support +R burning.

  6. Screw it man, just go with a DVD-R burner if you want guarnteed
compatibility with 95+% of settop players. Thats the bottom line.
BTW, HP doesnt mean quality, they go with the +R standard for
some reason, almost refuse to go with -R standard... Trying to
push a standard that is not widly accepted.

Therefore, dont go to Blockbuster looking for videos in BetaMax
    format either... Similar analogy.

    Good luck!

  7. +R compatibility is at least as good as -R compatibility.

For some reason, I get better results when burning +R or +RW disks with Nero 5.5.9.0 (and above) as it is more likely to be compatible with my DVD player (I am not sure why but it is).

The bitset utility helps the playback of +RW discs on a number of DVD players. The HP 200i comes with this bitset utility. The Sony DRU120 doesn't. I am very happy with my HP 200i drive.

  8. Just a piece of information....electronics manufacturering co. have basically split into two groups: the -R/RW and the +R/RW ( I believe there may be one or two who are playing in both platforms - Sony f.e). Granted that +R/RW is newer and therefore media more expensive...But guess who Microsoft is backing? +R/RW!! This is no guarantee of where the future may lead, but if I were to place my money, I would go for the +R/RW option...
