  1. Hi there, just got Broadband a few weeks back and have been downloading like crazy. Anyway I have managed to D/L a movie which is in two parts (Part 1 - 695mb, Part 2 - 700mb) but the files are .avi's.

The filenames suggest this is a DVD-Rip and upon playing in Windows Media Player I have to say the quality of picture is amazing, much better than any VCD I have ever seen.

That said, how do I burn these using Nero 5.5.9.0 (Latest Version)??

I presume that burning onto SVCD will give me the best picture but that will involve installing various other software.

I tried just selecting VCD in Nero and the dragging the .avi into the window and it appears to go in OK, I just didn't want to select Burn in case it isn't the best way to go about things.

How much quality will I lose if I burn it as a VCD? Should I go for SVCD?

Also how long does it take to convert a 700mb .avi ito an .MPG???

    Cheers

So you have, roughly, 1.4 gig of a movie. If you just burn these to CD
it should be ok. IF you want to make a VCD the file size would be too
big for one CD. I would guess (would anyone like to verify) that IF you
wanted these files to be VCD then would have 4 CD's. You would
have to split each avi into 2 parts first, then use Nero to make a VCD
    out of each file.
I have a 200 meg asf file that I wanted to make into a VCD, but after I
used Nero to burn it the end resulting file was 940meg. Too big for
one CD, so I had to "Cut" the asf first then make the VCD.

I am still a Newbie at this burning with Nero also but I have used it a
    little bit.

Nero did not like the asf extension so I changed it to avi and it
burned it with no problems. I still do not know if my VCD's play
in a DVD player yet as I do not have one. I am planning on buying
one soon, that is why I am making VCD's.

If you have anymore questions take a look around the "Forum"
using the search function OR just post another question if you can't
find the answer that way. Someone should be able to help you
or point you in the right direction.

You can selet VCD in Nero drag and drop the AVI and burn...here is what will happen...Nero will start to encode the AVI to mpeg1 vcd compliant ...when finished it will burn. Depending on your PC this could take a few hours or a day. ...While Nero is a great burner....I have never been happy with the results from Nero's encoding...quality is not as good as other encoders and you can't set any options.

Better way is to use TMPG and encode yourself, you can set aspect ratio and source frame size...(bitrates and output frame sizes if you can use Nonstandard compliant VCD) Either way you go the encode (or change to) mpeg is what will take the longest.....burning is burning.
Then Burn select VCD and drag and drop with Nero.....Nero will just check the file then burn VCD (be shure to uncheck vcd compliant if you have a nonstandard VCD file..)

As far as file size..check time length of avi you have (are they both like 60 minutes?) if so they will each fit on one cd when done...VCD standard is roughly 10 mb a minute ..so 60 minutes equals about 600mb... Every one says that you can get 800mb on a single 80min CDR/CDRW...but most I have personally gotten is 770mb....with no overburning (yes those are on the 80min, 700mb cdr's)

"There is an update for Nero to burn SVCD from the website".

I tried just selecting VCD in Nero and the dragging the .avi into the window and it appears to go in OK, I just didn't want to select Burn in case it isn't the best way to go about things.

"That's what I did and it worked".

"Depends on the quality of the avi's (Crap in - Crap Out).
But in your case it sounds like you should not loose too much."

Also how long does it take to convert a 700mb .avi ito an .MPG???

"Depends on your system. If you have a dozen CPU's then it should
only take a couple of minutes

No, really, I convert my avi's to mpeg at night cause it takes anywhere
from 4-6 hours. Just check my system stats to see what I have and
    compare it to yours".
