  1. Hi,

New to this NG... I am trying to create a VCD out of VHS taped TV shows using an AverTV Studio capture card on a 1.7 GHz machine, 256 MB RAM with a VisionTek (Xtasy) Geforce4 64 MB vid card and SB Live.

I am following instructions from this page:

    http://www.dapcentral.org/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=vie...artid=1&page=3

Step 4 (in case you can't get to this page, the relevant excerpt from the step in question is: "Go to Video>>Format. Select YUY2, 640x480. If your CPU is underpowered, select 320x240, but this will degrade quality SEVERELY..."

However, when I go to select Video > Compression 640 x 480 in VirtualDub, I get an error telling me this is an unsupported format. Using AverTV Studio means I have to use a WDM driver. Does this mean that capturing at a resolution of 640 x 480 is impossible? Again, I am using a 1.7 GHz CPU, so my tendency is to surmise my CPU can take the battery of selecting this resolution.

I would really like to be able to get better video quality than 320 x 240! Maximizing the finished product to even a 17" screen is very fuzzy. Any help would be appreciated!

  3. I am not sure but the problem could be that you are not actually getting 640 x 480 with AverTV Studio. You may be getting 640 x 240 causing the error in VirtualDUB. You may want to download a freeware program called MPEGed to check the resolution of the video clip to make sure that it is indeed 640 x 480. I have AverTV Studio as well and cannot record 480 lines of resolution. I could once for a short time using tweaked drivers from iulab but they have failed now.

  4. Finally go the full frame 640 x 480 and 720 x 480 quality after downloading the latest software and drivers from avermedia. Make sure that when you capture that the box is checked under VCR setting for full size capture.
