  1. Im thinking about purchasing a DVD writer and transfering my VHS tapes on to a DVD-R. But i have a few questions before doing so,

    1. All of my VCR tapes were recorded SP Mode. While transfering it to DVD, will the quality degrade?

    2. How many hours does a regular blank DVD disc will hold?

    3. Do i need a video card hooked up to my computer?

    4. And how does the quality look on a HDTV? Regular TV?

  2. I am by no means an expert but I have been playing around with archiving our old vhs tapes (15 yrs old) an have been getting a 2 hr tape on 1 dvd-r at a good looking resolution of 4500 bps vbr. That is about as good as you need considering that the vhs tape is considerable lower. And the sp modse is the best that a regular vcr is going to capture it is a lot better than ep mode when trying to copy . As far as the quality my wife and I were amazed at the way our first dvd-r of my oldest daughter turned out it is as good as the tape and hopefully after I get my Microtime T-120d time base corrector my dvd-r's will be better than the original. The video card I don't understand the ? unless you mean the capture card. I am using a Provideo PV-256 and have had a great deal of success with it. I hope this answers at least part of what you wanted ,Good Luck

    Hi,

Try reading the "What Is" and "How To" guides in the left-hand column on this screen.

There are far too many choices to provide a simple answer other than: yes, you can do it and won't really lose quality but you won't get DVD quality.

In response to your HDTV question you must remember that HD is almost twice the resolution of normal, so if you think this will make your vision from an analogue source better it won't. What it does is make any bad vision, dropouts etc look twice as bad. If it was a good quality digital source then it would pretty good on HD.
