I have just captured an avi file from cable tv and I decided to re-encode it in divx's 2 pass mode but when it finished the picture output in VDub was replaced by black boxes in both windows. The audio however was still present.
What am I missing in doing it this way and also is it possible to capture directly to 2 pass mode?
I also tried to re-encode in 2-pass, 2nd pass but all it gave me was an error about the bitrate being to low and the codec setting the bitrate to zero.
Any help in solving this problem is appreciated.

Try using 1-pass and doing a short test encode using vdub's mark-in and mark-out buttons. Do you get any picture then?
The general idea would be to capture to the least-lossy format possible, and then convert to DivX at leasure. By definition you cannot capture directly to a 2-pass mode. Even 1-pass mode compression to DivX when capturing is not possible.
