How do i convert my MPEG2 to a 4.7GB DVD-R. Is this possible. Recently brought the new Hitachi DVD-CAM which records in MPEG2 on an 8cm DVD-RAM disc. I have my MPEG2 movies on computer but how do i put it on a DVD-R, or is this not possible, or do i have to make an SVCD.Thanks.

Go here: http://www.kvcd.net
And read about the KDVD template. You can use the 720x480 or the 352x480 template. Both will produce compliant MPEG-2 files ready to burn to DVD-R.

that's creating a VCD though. Is it possible to create an actual DVD on a 4.7 GB DVD-R disc.

You'll find the KDVD templates on the right side.

Don't forget you can only get 4.37 gigabytes on a "4.7GB disk."
The quoted value is based on 1000x1000x1000 not 1024x1024x1024
becuase there are 8bits in a byte not 10! -
Jonod1, you will find all the help you need if you read through the guides on the left.

The DVD-RAM disc you have from your camcorder will probably be in the DVD specs VR mode as thats what DVD-RAM uses. This is the same mode that the new Pioneer DVD-RW stand alone video recorder can use although of course the Pioneer player cannot accept DVD-RAM discs. Essentially it's just an unfinalised DVD but most current players need a finalised disc before they can play it. The VR mode allows minidisc style editing.
If your stand alone DVD player has the new -RW logo and the manual says it can play VR mode discs then it's easy if you have a DVD-RAM drive in your PC that can also write to DVD-R. Simply copy the entire contents of the DVD-RAM disc to your PC then copy them to the blank DVD-R assuming your cd/dvd writing software supports both drives. If your Hitachi transfer software allows you to see the DVD-RAM disc as just another drive use the same process. If your player does not support the VR mode then it's not quite so simple.
If you have an MPEG2 file on your PC then it may already be within the DVD spec but you will still need some kind of DVD Authoring application to produce the correct disc format to play back in a stand alone DVD player. If you simply copy the MPEG2 file to a blank disc you will only end up with a DVDrom disc containing a video file. This will play on a PC but not a stand alone DVD player. -

Unless he had one of the newer Toshibia or panasonic DVD-Rom's or a DVD-Ram recoder it will not read, I know I have the Panasonic DMR E-20 and tried the Ram discs in everything around here and have not found the newer DVD-Rom players with Ram capability yet.

Ironwood321 is correct.
In PC terms 1Gb =1024Mb.
In the DVD spec 1Gb=1000Mb.
Many hard drive manufacturers now also quote their capacities in terms of 1Gb=1000Mb which, being PC based, they shouldn't really do. This is why a 40Gb Maxtor hard drive shows less being available once in your PC, your PCs operating system still talks in terms of 1Gb=1024Mb. -
