  1. Hey folks, I became an expert this past year on VCD and SVCD using my AIW RADION 32DDR. Now I am starting over, learning to DVD-RIP since I finally got a DVD drive. Please bear with me...

    Processor: 1Ghz AMD Duron
    MEM: 512 DDR
    Board: VIA Chipset (never again)

    RIP: Smartripper (Love it)
DVDx problem: Out of sync audio, and if that isn't bad enough, crackles and pops (kinda like rice crispies). I checked the box for sync'ing the audio to try to eliminate the problem. No change. I had the audio downmix (48-44) set as high quality as possible. Trying to go to SVCD format. I haven't figured out yet how to frameserve it to TMPGenc yet. Maybe on the horizon. Is there a quick solution to my problems:

    1) Popping sound
    2) Sync issue
    3) Frameserver to TMPGenc

    2nd scenerio:

    RIP: Smartripper
Open VOB in DVD2AVI. Set this and that, downmix audio, etc. Save project (it does it's thing, sends audio to WAV file). Open the video file in TMPGenc, open the audio file in TMPGenc, adjust the aspect ratio, bitrate, etc. Hit encode, and it is on it's merry way. What's my problem, you probably ask? Not really having one, I would like to eliminate one very long process: Waiting the 3-4 hours for the audio to extract using DVD2AVI. I have not mastered the command-line batches yet for running these tools, and therefore I do the DVD2AVI on my VOB's overnight, then TMPGenc in batch mode the next day before I go to work. If I can get DVDx to workey, would it save me time and steps, or is scenerio 2 the better choice?

    Thanks in advance folks! :P

HI , I HAVE NOT POSTED IN THIS FORUM FOR A LONG TIME .I HAVE BEEN RIPPING DVD'S FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS . EARLIER I HAD A 1GHZ AMD ATHLON BUT NOW I HAVE AN AMD ATHLON XP 1700 512 DDR RAM AND MSI MOTHERBOARD K7N 420 PRO WITH ONBOARD GERORCE-2.IHAVE THREE PLEX BURNERS (16/10/40 2BURNERS) AND (24/10/40 1BURNER) ON THIS SYSTEM. I HAV AN ACER 16X DVD DRIVE FOR RIPPING THE DVD'S. I FIRST RIP A DVD USING DVD DECRYPTER 3.1.1.0 TO MY HARD DISK .THIS TAKES ABOUT 5 TO 6 MINUTES . I THEN ADD THE VOB FILES TO DVD2AVI 1.77.3. TO CONVERT THE VOB FILES TO D2V FILE AS WELL AS WAVE FILES .HERE THE SETTINGS FOR DVD2AVI ARE
OPEN DVD2AVI CLICK ON OPEN PROJECT IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY GO TO THE FOLDER WHERE THE VOB FILES ARE SAVED CLICK OPEN AND THE FIRST VOB FILE IS ADDED AND IS HILIGHTED IN A NEW BOX ALONG WITH THE OTHER VOB FILES IN THE HARD DISK.CLICK OK AND THE DVD2AVI SCREEN ALMOST FILLS THE MONITER SCREEN.IN THE AUDIO TAB SET THE TRACK NUMBER TO 1,IN THE OUTPUT TAB TO DECODE TO WAVE (AC3,LPCM) ,IN DOLBY DIGITAL DECODE ENABLE DOLBY SURROUND DOWNMIX, IN DYNAMIC RANGE CONTROL ENABLE NORMAL, IN 48 TO 44.1KHZ ENABLE ULTRA HIGH, IN OPTIONS TAB ENABLE PROCESS PRIORITY TO NORMAL AND NOT HIGH BECAUSE IF IT IS SET TO HIGH U CANNOT USE THE COMPUTER FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE.NOW GO BACK TO THE FILE TAB AND CLICK ON SAVE PROJECT. ANEW WINDOW WILL OPEN . GIVE A NAME OF THE MOVIE FOR THE FILES AN CLICK SAVE AND U WILL GET A D2V AS WELL AS A WAVE FILE IN ABOUT 1 HOURS TIME DEPENDING ON UR SYSTEM SPEED AND CONFIGURATION . NOW IN THE 3RD STEP OPEN TMPEGENC CLICK ON THE VIDEOSOURCE TAB AND LOAD THE D2V FILE CLICK ON THE AUDIO SOURCE TAB AND LOAD THE AUDIO FILE THAT U GOT FROM DVD2AVI. GO TO THE LOAD TAB AND CLICK ON THE APPROPRIATE TEMPLATE U WANT LIKE PAL OR NTSC VCD . NOW GO BACK AND CLICK ON SETTINGS TABA NEW WINDOW WILL OPEN WITH AFEW MORE TABS. HERE CLICK ON THE MOTION SERCH PRECISION TAB AND SET IT TO HIGH QUALITY (SLOW) .IN THE ADVANCED TAB GO TO VIDEO ARRANGE TAB AND SET IT TO FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO).IN THE WINDOW BELOW DOUBLE CLICK ON SOURCE RANGE A NEW WINDOW WILL OPEN . HERE SET START FRAME . NOW PULL THE CURSOR TO THE END AND SET END FRAME .NOW MOVE THE CURSOR TO THE START AND CLICK OK . NOW U R BACK TO THE PREVIOUS WINDOW.DO NOT FOR GET TO TICK MARK THE SOURCE RANGE. DONOT CHANGE OR TOUCH ANY OTHER SETTINGS. NOW GO BACK TO HE MAIN WINDOW OF TMPEGENC AND PRESS START.WAIT FOR AROUND THREE HOURS DEPENDING ON UR SYSTEM AND UR VCD MPEG FILE IS READY . NOW BURN THE MPEG FILE IN NERO AND ER VCD IS READY. IF U WANT TO CREAT AN SVCD ONLY A SMALL CHANGE .CLICK ON THE LOAD TAB LOAD THE SVCD TEMPLATE . CLICK ONTHE SETTINGS TAB AND THEN ON THE ADVANCED TAB AND IN THE RATE CONTROL MODE CHANGE IT TO 2 PASS VBR.
BYE HOPE U READ AN UNDERSTAND THIS GUIDE. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO CREATE A VCD OR SVCD . DVD DECRYPTER, DVD2AVI. AND TMPEGENC GIVE THE BEST RESULTS. I TRIED DVDX FROM THE BEGINNING AND IT HAS ALWAYS GIVEN ME LIP SYNCRO PROBLEMS. :P

  3. tjdmobile shouted DECRYPTER, DVD2AVI. AND TMPEGENC GIVE THE BEST RESULTS
    ..in your opinion

You can save time by NOT downsampling in DVD2AVI as its downsampling routine is very slow. Instead use SSRC (also of high quality but faster, download from http://shibatch.sourceforge.net/) as a downsampling tool inTMPGEnc, and you should save a considerable amount of time.

  5. Thanks for the good replies, everyone!

I am probably going to just continue to do the DVD2AVI route, as it yeilds the best results to date (for me). I have also tried the DVD2SVCD tools found here on the site. I like it's ability to streamline the process. The only reason that I don't use it exclusively is because on the movie "Dinosaur", it had a lot of trouble with the first disk: Here's what it did...

It made it to the point of creating the MPG files for disk 1 and 2. It then started up vxdbuild and built a couple of BIN files for the VCD. So far so good? Well, here's the catch....

Disk 1's MPG file was 749 Meg. The resulting image was 420 Meg. Burned the image. The CUE file had duplicate entry points, causing me to have to edit them out (3 entry points of 00:30:00). Final result after burning was about 25 of the 40 minutes of video. There was about a 15 minute gap between disk 1 and 2. I went ahead and tried 4 different VCD authoring packages to burn the full 40 minutes in disk 1's MPG. The only one which did it was Nero. The only problem here is that I can't create entry points with Nero (right?). I tried a few times with DVD2SVCD with the same result, each time it did this only to disk 1. Disk 2 was correct.

Sorry for the long-winded post... I hope I can figure out my problem with DVD2SVCD, because I really like that "no-brainer" approach to making SVCD's. Conclusion: DVD2AVI - TMPGenc yields consistantly good results.

  6. Just as a clarification: I did not advise against using DVD2AVI itself. DVD2AVI is what I use myself and it has always worked for me. Just don't use DVD2AVI's audio resampling to 44.1kHz but use SSRC in TMPGEnc instead to save some time - the audio quality will pretty much be identical (at least I can't hear a difference on my Studio monitor speakers).

  7. Hi there,

I've been using DVD2SVCD (can get from doom9.org). Everything is pretty much automated. You load DVD and hit GO. It also does MPEG4 to SVCD conversion as well.

One thing I found from this all-in-one program, if you use external ripper you might have audio out of sync problem (for some DVDs). But the ripper that comes with it, it works perfectly every time. You can find a guide there also. You need encoder for conversion either -- CCE or TMPGenc, it doesn't come with it.

You can give it a try, I'm very happy with this program.

  8. Does anyone know where to find the SSRC.exe on the net? The original web site is gone.

    Thanks!

  9. Nevermind. Doom9.org had it.

Is the quality of SVCD created by DVD2SVCD good comparing to TMPGEnc ?

    Thanks

  11. Susie,

DVD2SVCD results in a pretty fantastic dub of the original DVD. I choose the 2-pass VBR for mine. Since it uses TMPGenc for encoding (in most cases, the bunch of us think it's about the best encoder since it's free) you could get the same result without DVD2SVCD, but then again, why would you? I prefer to make the conversion as easy as possible.

  12. HI,

I have been using DVDx for a while. It only works on some dvds so I wouldn't recommend it. I always have problems with it such as it not encoding the whole movie or it taking the directors commentary as its audio track.

I hate it. The only thing that was nice about it was it was a one step process. I love to start it before I go to sleep and then it would rip the movie by morning. The fact that I could do it while I was sleeping gave me an opprotunity to use my computer during the day.

If anyone out there knows of a program that will encode an svcd from dvd in one step (in good quality) please tell me. I picked this thread because some of the posters were very informative.

    Thanks,

    #1NewBie
