  1. I thought I would start a new thread being movie specific, hoping someone has had success with the same movie I'm trying to rip. I have tried doom9.org's guide, geocities/coddess's guide, and mpucoder.kewlhair's guide all with different results, but no success. The movie in question is Gladiator signature selection (rental). Just for anyone upset about my stealing this movie, yes I know it is, but I consider it an udgrade since I spent $20.00 on the VHS video and I'm not spending another $20.00 for the DVD. With that said HEEEELP!!!! The only thing that I may be doing wrong with the guides is when they indicate what options to select they do not indicate if you deselect the default options or leave them be, I left them as is. I have followed them word by word.

    My Equip:

    Pioneer 104 DVD-RW
    Nero
PrimoDVD (not installed at the same time as Nero)
    WinDVD

  2. I am having the exact same problem you are. I have tried both splitting guides on 2 different movies with no luck. They will not play back in WINDVD correctly before I try and burn them. I get the FBI logo, then WINDVD locks up. When I burn them with Nero and throw them in my Apex 5131, it plays the FBI warning, then starts the movie. In both cases the movie will run for a second or two, then do an infinite loop-back to the beginning. There is obviously some vital step I am missing in the guides but I can't seem to figure it out. ANY help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I have now wasted 10 hours and 2 blank DVDs trying to get this to work.

  3. i also have the same problem with kiss of the dragon i wanne split it to keep everythin on 2dvd-r's but just the intro and the warning screen comes and then it stops and i follow the steps of the doomguide to split a dvd9 to 2dvd5 with ifoedit but no luck so far even when i rip it to get only the movie without the extra's it is still bigger then 4.7gig so i wanne keep all of this movie.
i hope there is someone who does this before with luck!!!!

  4. Try this guide. It has worked on the 1 movie I have tried so far, but it is for the movie only and no extras.

it wasn't mentioned in this thread, so i figure i might as well bring up my way of doing things:

i follow the guide from www.dvd2dvdr.com and just rip the movie. i don't even have a menu for all of my DVD-R movies anymore. it's just like vhs (which i've found to be much easier for people i sell to, because they just pop it in and it plays the video; you dont have to take the time to create a menu nor have them figure out they have to hit the play button). most dvd's these days are dual layer (dvd-9, 9 gigs), however a lot of them, when you use 'stream processing' in smartripper, will go below 4.3gigs and you can rip it without trans-encoding.

    just my .02 cents,

    k.

  7. So Fand, do you select rip max filesize but set the max to around 4gb? Do you still select demux to new file for audio & video (ie does this give two .m2v & .ac3 files, one for each half, or do you still rip all the vobs)? If not, could you elaborate on the settings you use please. I'm also trying to find the simplest way of doing it (not neccessarily the quickest though, just less fannying around changing ifo files and stuff). I'm also only interested in the movie.....

  8. Have any of you guys tried this......?

    - Rip movie vob files only (I used Smart Ripper, but presumably DVD Decrypter does the same)
    - Seperate half the vobs into one folder, the other half in another.
    - Go into IfoEdit, select create IFO, then select the first vob. I found it automatically reads the next vobs, then gives you your other (Ifo, bup, etc) files! Voila! I've not tested it yet, but the dvd play worked in IfoEdit. I'm going to try burning, so I'll let you know how I get on.....

Hope it works 'cos that was a piece of p**s!

  9. Bugger....

The first dvd works for the first half, but the second doesn't play.

    Bang goes that idea........

    1. rip movie in smartripper using the 'stream processing' method. demux both audio and video so you get a .m2v file and .ac3 file.
    2. determine if the .m2v + .ac3 file is less than 4.3 gigs, if so, burn and done.
    3. otherwise, use rempeg. here is my findings on rempeg (which i highly recommend !)

    rempeg:

-load the file. this will take a little bit of time depending on computer speed.
-go to 'options' tab, and select: average bitrate: 3.75kb/sec, then check 'limit max bitrate' and set to around 5.25kb/sec. this allows rempeg to do VBR. if you do not do this, you will notice macroblocks (also called "artifacting") in various movies. these are preliminary values that should work, however if you notice your new file being too big or small, simply adjust both settings.
-check 'match source' instead of 'progressive only' .. the reason here is that for example (i just ran into this tonight) the movie PI has a 1.66 aspect ratio, which isn't 4:3 nor 16:9 (tip: don't try to set this to 16:9 in ifoedit :P leave it as 4:3 !)
    -set resolution to 720x480

go back to 'main' tab, and encode.

then load up spruce. i so happened to "stumble" upon a ..good.. version (contact me if you need it) .. author your dvd, write it to a title set somewhere.

afterwards, depending on the aspect ratio (MOST SHOULD BE 16:9 or 4:3, and if they are, it is your preference if you wish to make them 16:9 or 4:3 (you can do this in ifoedit quite easily) .. if they aren't (ie. PI), then don't change anything.. keep it at 4:3 aspect (which is what it most likely will be..)) you should go into ifoedit and do:

    1. if you wish to change aspect ratio, follow dvd2dvdr.com's guide. it's decent (although worded slightly difficult to understand at first). if you don't wish to, click on 'Get_vts_sectors' which syncs anything that could have gone wrong. i always make it a habit of doing this as the last thing before i proceed to burning the dvd.

now load up nero, choose ISO/UDF, iso level 1, uncheck joilet, set your label, transfer AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS and burn.

    cheers,

    k
