I have had AVIs that would not convert using VirtualDub. One solution is the encode the AVI using TMPGEnc to mpeg format. This normally works for many avis with such errors. You can then either reprocess the avi again or just use the internal filters in TMPGEnc, depending if you want to suffer the slight quality drop for multiple encodes.

Have you tried changing the VFAPI Plugin priorities (increasing Open DML) for TMPGEnc. Normally you gen an unsupporteds messages if
1) codec not installed - I assume Ok as VirtualDub reads it
2) using wrong AVI file reader -
You can also use graphedit for situations like this...
Usually Graphedit is used for hard to open wmv files but will open pesky avi's that don't want to be converted as well. The only drawback is that the filesize of the output file is huge as an uncompressed MS-YUV avi file.
But this can be avoided by placing a compressor in the middle of the conversion.
Try the wmv conversion guide on this site but replace the wmv file with your own.Big_Jit
