I've been thinking of buying a DVD player and a Surround Sound system.
I just bought a Playstation 2 and have been playing some DVD movies on
it. What are some pro's and cons of using a P2 for DVD's instead of a
DVD player? I live in the USA and don't plan on using a mod chip for
playing backups. Thanks.

hi, the biggest con as far as PS2 is concerned is that the picture quality isn't as good as that of a stand-alone DVD player. If you are a serious film fan (like me) than a DVD surround system would be a worthy investment. If you however, are simply a casual film watcher who just wants to experience surround sound, my advice would simply be to buy a (relatively) cheap Dolby digital/dts decoder and speaker set and hook it up to your PS2. You won't be disappointed with the results. I don't know much about US prices, but in the UK you can pick a kit which would do the job for £150-£250.
good luck -
I think one of the greatest Problems is it, that you cannot play any CD-R or CD-RW on a PS2. At least not on the European version.
So, if you consider to burn some VCD or SVCD you should buy one... -
Why do you say this? My PS2 plays DVDs better than my Apex and Toshiba. Maybe you have an older PS2 because they have been improving on their DVD player in the later versions. My PS2 is the most recent version as this guy's probably is also so he should not feel he has to get another player. As far as surround sound, if you are into watching movies than there is nothing better than watching them with a home theatre system.Originally Posted by mckeomat

It must be the age of my PS2 then, I got one when they first came out and the picture isn't too good in black/dark scenes. It's not that bad, but in the Alien Saga the dark scenes (of which there are many) looked really bad.

the ps2 is a piece of shit.
Sorry to say.
Now a computer hooked to a HDTV, now you have a game system. -
Nice troll
. I may never go back to playing games on a computer.
Try upgrading your OS and see how happy you still are. Or change a video driver! Or (insert one of a billion things here).
The biggest drawback as mentioned above was no VCDs. I might use my DVD player more for VCDs than DVDs! Get something that runs KVCDs and you'll be happy. They are getting pretty cheap nowadays.
