    Hello,

    I'm looking for some ideas/specs on capturing off my VCR.
    So, whats the best settings for VHS captures
    * resolutions
    * bits
    * audio

    I'll be using TMPGEnc 12 or so and I'm about ready to do some test captures/clips. So, I want to gather as much
    info first, before I take the plung. Remeber, I've only
    captures twice, many months ago, with a Dazzle usb and
    the ATI-tv wonder - both came out pretty bad, if I remember.

    Ok, my hardware I'll be using are:
    * DC10-Plus**
    * Sony SLV-685HF (hi-fi w/auto head cleaner)
    (My vcr is kind of old (if 6 years is concidered old))

    Does anybody have any sample clips that I can download
    to see what quality is like? Even if not captured with
    the DC10. I'm curious of the quality.

    Can give more info is needed.
    Thank you.

  2. I personally capture from vhs at 384*288, 24 bit (Pal 25 frames sec), and then use TMPGEnc to encode into a standard VCD at 1150kbit/sec

    I do use the High quality motion search, and have also enabled Noise reduction (I find the high quality noise reduction option makes it look worse for VHS input, but better for DVD input). Most of the other filters make little difference.

    I have tried higher bitrates and 1500 makes quite a difference, and 2000 is a little better again.

    Audio: I capture 44100Hz, 16 bit stereo, and am very happy with the quality.

    I had a DC10+. Got rid of it thanks to AMD and VIA

    There are many different solutions. It all depends on the quality of the input and the expected output.

    Balls to the wall capping at 640x480 6megs/second with full uncompressed 172kbit/s audio, then filtering and framserving w/V-Dub to create SVCD's will yeild the highest quality. As long as you don't abuse your filters.

    I've had very good results using the above to preserve VHS tapes. You should know that it is very time consuming, but the quality of the output is fabulous.

    If your after VCD's I wouldn't recomend capping both fields (use 240 instead of 480). This will just waste CPU time resizing and introduce the possibility of interlacing artifacts. I've used 640x240 6megs/second capping for VCD's. It may sound like a wierd resolution, but after converting all is fine.

    I have even achieved good results capping cable programs at 320x240 1.8megs/second. Then converting to VCD. Of course the higher the captured bit rate, the higher the final quality.
