avi to mpeg

Despite having 58 views, i guess no one wants to help me? or maybe my question is too basic even for the newbie section? pls let me know if my questions are too invalid, that i did not receive help due to this.

1)Which is the best freeware as well as buying software that can convert avi to mpeg(in order to burn vcds later) without loss of or minimum loss of quality and sound?

2)Also, which is the best resolution i should make the input avi file at? I have videowave 4 software, and Dazzla capture.

3)Next, i would want to view at full screen with good quality so which as already asked abv is the best software to convert avi to mpeg?

4)I assume, once i have the mpeg, i can burn it on to a cd, and can play it on a vcd/dvd player system and/or computer?

1) TMPGEnc. When you talk about MPEG, it's always lossy as it involves a process called DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) to compress picture frames. That's the most important algorithm in the world of multimedia or we simply afford to store large AVI files in CDs. We don't have 20Gig CD-R yet.

2) Resolution is not a problem. It will only affect your encoding time. The capture file format and method is more important. The best is to capture with firewire/USB 2.0 in AVI format or any lossless format. If your final format is VCD, it's recommended to capture to the size of the MPEG-1 format to reduce the encoding time. If it's DVD, use the MPEG-1 format. If you have to capture to MPEG file, higher capture bit rate is always better. Resolution is not a matter to affect your quality by much.

3) The best to do a screen dimension reformat is Panasonic MPEG Encoder. But it's not free and it's just for MPEG-1.


4) Software like Ahead Nero Burning ROM will do the job, you just need to provide a compliant MPEG file.
