  1. Hi,

When I use the standard VCD templates for encoding from AVI to VCD the picture is really quite good. What's really weird is that if I use an SVCD or DVD standard template the picture is much worse.

To make things even worse, if I attempt to de-interlace with any setting other than "double" the picture looks is completely distorted with wavy vertical lines.

    Any ideas?

My PC setup is in my profile

  2. What is your source material (format, resolution etc) as this has a huge impact on what any encoder can do for you

  3. It's SVHS captured at around 720x576 25 fps using Pinnacle DC10+ and virtuadub

After a few hours playing around I noticed that the quality problem was actually a playback problem. It looks like the screen resolution reduces during playback (sometimes) when playing MPG2. When the playback is fine I don't see much difference (if any) between VCD and DVD using the slowest decode method for both.

The problem with de-interlacing still exists though. I get zig-zag results if I deinterlace with anything other than "double"

I tried frameserving from virtuadub and tmpgenc but get the same wobbly image. The wobbles only seem to occur around motion which makes sense I guess.
