I have an avi file which is in wide screen (640x272) but when i use TMPGEnc to convert it to an svcd format mpeg it stretches the video out of proportion. now is there another program (or setting) which can add the black bars to the avi so when it is converted it stays in aspect?

Make sure that you have FullScreen Keep Aspect Ratio selected under the Advanced Tab (you might have to change the source aspect ratio to 2.11:1)
