  1. I was under the impression dvd players read mpeg1 as well as mpeg2...

I have created an mpeg1 file and burned to TDK CD-R. It does not play in my PS2 dvd player.

Is this a problem with burn process, file format, or PS2???

Just because they can play the stream doesn't mean they can read it off a data CD-ROM.

PS2 is a special case, it's crippled, it cannot play VCDs, SVCDs, or bare mpeg-1 streams AT ALL.

If you want to watch that stream on a PS2, you need to author a DVD with it and burn it to a DVD-R... and even then, the PS2 is picky about media quality.

Even if you do have a DVD player that can play VCDs, you have to author a VCD, not just smack an mpeg file onto a CDR. About the only time that what you did will work, is in the Apex 1200/1500/1600 players, or a PC.
