I decided I wanted to get a new player and went for the Apex AD-2100. After trying to play my first dvd backup I new I was in trouble. The Apex couldn't play the backup without skipping constantly. The backup xvcd was burned using nero onto a sony cd-r. Then I tried a memorex cd-rw and the player again would skip constantly.
I took the player back the next day and got the Sony NS315. This player would play my xvcds without skipping but the audio was horribly out of sync.
How come two new model players can't play my xvcd's correctly. My 3 year old JVC 523 would play all movies without any problems. I'm gonna return the Sony and either get the pioneer 444 or another JVC.

Fossilhauler,
I'm surprised that you did not respond to my post. I just bought the Apex AD-2100 b/c everyone said how great these units are (the older models, anyway). I am going to try the unit's compatibility this weekend, so I hope to get better results than you are having.

I just took back the Sony NS315 and got the JVC S500. I was hoping that the jvc woundn't give me any of the audio sync problems but it does. IT was playing the xvcd fine until I fast forwarded and then played again and everything was out of sync. I've used several different movies, all which were encoded using TMPGenc at
Resolution: 704x480
Frame Rate: 23.976
Rate Control Mode: Constant Quality, max-2450, quality at 100
Motion Search: High Quality
Audio
Sampling Frequency: 48000hz
Bitrate: 192kb
I used Tmpgenc to cut the movie into two parts and then Nero 5.5.8.2 to burn them to Sony 32x 700MB cd-rs.
This is how I've basically made every back-up except for using different max bitrates and different brands of cd-rs. I thought most new model DVD Players would play any of my backups but apparently not. Does anyone know why the players would go out of sync? Do I need to work the players in like a new baseball glove or what? Sorry to bitch guys just a little confused. -
Fossilhauler, convert the audio to 44100, and try maybe 224, then, if that doesn't work- if you're player has a resume spot function, then you can simply press stop, then play again, and it will go back in sync. also, you always want to use cds that will have no combatibility issues. I use Digital Media cdr's sold at circuit city, they are amazing. They are made by Princo I beilieve and Princo also make Circuit City cd-rs, and STI Cdr's. These cdr's work wonders in my Sony S560D as well as my APEX 1200, hope I helped, later

OK,
For those of you who are interested, my Apex AD-2100 played the following CD's without any trouble:
1) Media: Memorex 700MB CDRW (10x) - Using DVD2SVCD got "The Majestic" on 3 CD's at 480x480, VBR(1180k avg) w/audio at 128k, mpeg-2. Plays great, and looks like the original. Wife approved.
2) Media: Memorex 700MB CDRW (10x) - Using AverTV cap card at 720x480 recorded premiere of "The Dead Zone" on one CD w/o commercials using Kwag's x2 template with noise removal on and high-quality motion detection set. Even though cable signal was noisy, Apex renders this very well, looks good.
BTW - ff and rew work much better with mpeg-2 than mpeg-1 on this player based on observations with the two examples above.

to any of u, before u go and return and buy another player, take a couple of your vcds or svcds or whatever u made and ask the people at the store if u could try to play them before u buy the player.

Smokey,
I live in New York where inconveniencing the snobby staff (none of the players are connected to TV's, and most are not even plugged in) means INSTANT DEATH! That is why I looked on this forum for the most likely candidate before buying. Hence, I assumed, I would find one relatively easily. BTW, the Apex AD-2100 is much more refined than the 1200 or the 1500, and plays well for me so far.

I just bought 3 pioneer 343 for $99 from amazon.com with free shipping and no tax with -$5 coupon. One is for my sister wedding present, one for my other sister and one for my brothers. I have a pioneer 434 and my family has 343 and one of my other sisters has the 434 also and never had problems. Only sour point to me is no subtitles but I can live. Seems like bestbuy has the jvc xvs300bk for $129 which seems to be decent since amazon sold out of the pioneer one.

I have a apex 660. It doesn't like movies encoded to 23.976. All my movies that are 29.97 play perfect. I really think apex doesn't like to convert for you. That's just my two cents worth.
