  1. I want to send my brother a movie, but he uses Playstation 2 to play DVD's. I saw here that SVCD's cannot play on PS2. The original format was DivX avi, which I converted to SVCD. Is there a way to make a DVD that he could play on his PS2?

  2. You can use TMPGEnc to convert the avi to mpeg2 dvd format. You also need an authoring program. You should really look at the help guides as they are very helpful.

  4. Thank you. One last question..

If I want the best quality and use a high bitrate, is their a limit to the size of a file I can make? I use WInXP, NTFS file system. I would like to make it take up the whole DVD if possible.

  5. As you are using NTFS I believe that the only file size restriction you will have will be due to the DVD media you are using.

  6. correct bluesxman with just one small proviso. TmpGenc produces .mpg files with compressed mp2 audio. If you are using a DVD authoring program that only supports PCM (such as Sonic DVDit) this will extract and uncompress the audio, taking up loads of room on thie disc. Use an authoring proggy that supports .mp2 or .ac3 if you can.

  7. Can you suggest one, will Nero work?

  8. Nero will not author DVD's. It will burn the DVD files to the disc but most authoring proggys will do that for you. I am currently playing with Dazzle DVD complete, this supports mp2 audio fine but I am having trouble persuading it to write to my A03. Instead I Author to HD and use Nero to burn, look in the guides for info on using Nero to burn DVD Video. I am sure other DVD authoring proggys also support mp2. DVDiT PE supports stereo AC3 but I have had sync problems with that. I think spruce will support any valid DVD audio format, but it is no longer on sale and the trial floating around the web only allows 2 disc burns unless you can find a cracked copy. Post another question on the forum regarding this and I am sure you will get plenty of advice.

  9. [cry]

OK I used to TMPGEn to make a DVD mpg2, the files is almost 3 gigs.

I tried all of the DVD software you listed, Dazzle would not recognize the file as DVD compliant at all, Spruce Up compiled the file, crashed right before writing to DVD. I was able to produce a .img file before the 2 trials were used up. I also have the files in the TS_video folder. I tried using Nero to burn the files from this folder, but immediately it says "DVD-Video files reallocation failed".

What am I doing wrong? I have no problems doing CD's or SVCD's.

  10. Not sure what you are doing wrong but here is something that might help. The TmpGenc NTSC DVD template sets The number of P picture in GOP to 5. I am not sure if this is within the DVD spec or not but I have found that DVDit will only accept TmpGenc produced Mpegs if this is set to 4 (it can be found under settings->Gop Structure tab, remember to load unlock.mcf first).

Dazzle DVD complete should be able to accept the same files too. Try this with a small clip before spending hours re-encoding.

  11. OK I think I figured it out, it seems Nero is the only program compatible with my Pio DVR-103VA. In Ulead, it will not let me change the burning speed to my burner (1x or 2x). I need to burn at 1x in order not to get a "Power Calibration Error".

So, Ive been using Ulead to author the VIDEO_TS folder to my harddrive, and then buring with Nero.

When done, I can play the DVD with WinDVD fine. On the standalone DVD, it plays very erraticlly, so the problem seems to be with the DVD player, or with the way Nero burns it.

Are there some other DVD burning programs I could try that would be compatible with my burner?
