I removed my A-03 from my computer and installed in into a Firewire enclosure.

It now works with any of my 4 computers, inc. a laptop.
However, burning any file to it now takes forever! A 933k test file took over 15 minutes to burn and finalize!!!

VideoPack 5 failes every time I try to burn with it (yes, it worked great when the drive was installed).

The firmware has never been updated. Is this why I'm having trouble?

To update the firmware, do I have to connect the drive to an IDE bus?

Running XP Pro on all my computers.

    Thanks.

What enclosure are you using? Does it have a fan on the back? Just food for thought...

Strange. When I first put my DVD-RAM/-R in a firewire enclosure, it would work inconsistently with XP. Got the same result with a different firewire enclosure. However, my XP was hosed already and I was going to reformat anyway, so I did.

After the reformat, everything worked fine in both firewire enclosures. Incidentally, one of them doesn't have a fan.

Are you having the same problem with all four computers? If so, I wonder if setting the master/slave/cable select settings would make any difference.

Try filling the disc completely, this should take around 60 minutes and if it does confirms you have no problem at all.

Good point. What software does this automatically?

    Philip to the rescue again!

Actually, I haven't tried your suggestion yet, but...

I changed the firmware to 1.80.
Since I had to reinstall the drive to an IDE controller to update the firmware, I tried writing the same file to it.

Guess what? It took just as long!
