I know that this is possible by connecting an IDE cable to the DVD player. WHat i dont know is what to do after that. Will my computer automatically detect it as a dvd-rom drive or will i have to get some drivers or something. Where would i go about getting some drivers. I know this can be done but i just dont know all the steps needed to do so.

If anyone can help a brotha out, it would be greatly appreciated.

  2. I know it could be done on certain Apex home player drives, though why you want to do this is beyond me.

True, with the APEX units, it's just a way to upgrade the firmware.

I dont know that you would want to keep the unit connected to
the pc for any length of time.

Not sure if that would really work..and with dvdrom drives as low as $27.00, why bother? It would be much easier to just purchase and
    install a dvdrom drive.

That is true i know. But i just got a new DVD player and figured i couls use the old one for something. I heard that this was possible. the only reason im not buying a DVD-Rom is because i have a Compaq PC and Compaq's name should be changed to Compact because they just cram everything in there so damn tight. SO i have not the room for one. What i do have is a long IDE cable in whihc i could connect the standalone to externally.

I've personally never seen any info on using a standalone dvd player as a DVDROM drive with a PC? I've only seen the APEX info, where u connect it to upgrade firmware.

My advice is too sell the standalone unit, and purchase a dvdrom drive.

You can install an IDE drive from a standalone in your computer. I had an Apex Ad-500W that causing rolling black bars on my TV. I remove from the player and installed it in my computer. The computer recognized it and it ran just in the computer. I eventully traced my problem to a faulty power supply in the AD-500W.
