AVI to MPG

I'm new at this. I've gone through the Turtorials 5 times. I've read all the questions and answers from other people in this forum.

I just need to know what program do I use to convert AVI files to MPG files. Where can I get the program?

Also, why do some AVI files work with Windows Media Player and some do not??? Any help is greatly appreciated.
