  1. I am using Smart Ripper 2.41 on my PC that is running Windows XP. I am using Power DVD 3.0. Before I upgraded to XP the DVD software I was using different DVD software.

My question is this. When I 'rip' my DVD's the 'speed' is 1.1x. Prior to XP I would 'rip' at 3 or 4x.

Is there a setting of somekind that I can make to speed up my rips. I don't remember making any special settings when I was using ME. I read somewhere that XP has no ASPI layer and that one may wish to add that, but I didn't really understand it so I didn't do that.

I hope that there is some way to get around this really slow process. Thanks for any help or insight that anyone can give.

  2. you probably do not have the DMA feature on your DVD drive enabled. Some DVD drives include a diag that allows you to do that.... or go to Control panel,
    system
    Device
    CDRom
    Highlite: DVD Drive
    settings
    select "DMA"
    restart your computer

good luck, i'm pretty positive this will do it

  3. I appreciate the suggestion, and when trying to do that (in XP) I don't have a 'settings' option when I look at the properties of the DVD. Is there a different approach in XP?

Thanks a lot for the help, I'm sure you're right, but I'm not able to get to the setting to do it.

    Hum.....

  4. HI MIKAJAY

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IT IS TO DO WITH HE ASPI LAYER.

BASICALLY WINDOWS HAS NO ASPI SO YOU HAVE TO MANUALY INSTALL IT. THE ASPI LAYER YOU NEED IS INCLUDED IN THE TOOLS SECTION OF THE VCD HELP SITE.

THIS SHOULD IN THEORY SPEED UP THE RIPPING PROCESS FOR YOU.

GOOD LUCK WITH THIS ONE AND BE CAREFUL WHEN INSTALLING. READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

Talk about getting up on the wrong side of the bed. The person obviously and quite simply just typed with the CAPS LOCk on. I think a simple heads up would have sufficed.

  9. u want some speed, man? i got some speed right here for ya man-

Anyone who can beat these rip speeds bring it on-

    Audiocatalyst- 27.34 x
    smart ripper- 10.4 x

    How ?!?!?!?!?!
    VERY simple

Since no one is gonna help out someone with xp, lets bring the universal person in here, ok buddy-

Go to your device manager, find the IDE\ATAPI controllers

In there u will have primary and secondary, choose secondary.

In here, u will have device 0 and device 1.
Device 0 is your master(usually the top cdrom drive is the master)

If u only have 1 cdrom drive then it will only let u change one.

if ur dvd rom drive is the master, choose transfer method- DMA if available, and of course, if its the slave change transfer method on device 1.

NOTE- do NOT change both devices to dma!

    Now, restart ur pc

    Open smartripper and hit settings

U will notice in settings there are 2 tabs, movie and files

If u use both of these methods, make sure u make the same changes in both-

question askin bout normal, aspi, auto---- choose auto to speed up.

On far right, ONLY THINGS CHECKED-
Unlock drive, ignore low disk space, fast eror skip.

U need not check de-macrovision because u are here to encode these vobs, not watch em on ur pc.
By having demacro... unchecked, it performs the fastest rip u will ever see.
    ShiZZZoN PzN

Everyday is another payday and I am one step closer to becoming the one.

  10. Thanks for the tip ... unfortunately it didn't work on my system.
Well any tip is better than none

Anyways can't complain at least I could still rip at around 2.3 in WinXP. Just let it run and do something else!

    Keep those tips coming...

  11. Just curious, why 'NOTE- do NOT change both devices to dma! '? I have all my drives set to DMA, I thought thats the way you're supposed to.

FYI, my (cheap) RAITE DVD drive is supposed to be 8x, but I never can rip above 2.2x max. Happened under both Win98 and WinXP (w/aspi installed).

Don't fret over it too much. It also has to do how the DVD was encrypted. I have 16X Pioneer and the highest it's ever ripped is at 9.7 with unencrypted movies. Encrypted ones start out at about 3.2 and gradually work up to around 8.4.

  13. Thanks Sean Madison

What you suggested worked for me, I went from 1 - 2 to 8 - 9...am very pleased with it!!

    Running Win XP
    Lite on DVDROM 16x10
    2 ghz p4
    1 gb memory

I also downloaded the ASPI and ForcAspi....that may or may have not helped....

    I'm a happy camper!!!!
