  3. There is still a major shortage of that drive.

So I decided to buy the Pioneer A05 instead. Was 100 box cheaper and it was available.
Also I found cheap 1x DVD-R for 2$ (1.10$ US) canadien here in montreal.

With the upcoming drives supporting both + et -, I dont think the -R is gonna dissapear anytime soon anyway.

What pretty amaze me is seeing a Dude buying 6 DVD +R at 10$ a piece and telling me that the -R/-RW was dead and that I shouldnt had buy a Pioneer drive...

  5. $288.28 (tax and shipping included) October 09, 2002 from Dell.com during their biggest mistake of the year when they were giving BIG DISCOUNT. I had to wait for more then a month to get it

  6. I too wanted one bad last month and wasn't willing to pay Ebay prices for a possible used product and I wasn't going to wait until late January (as the Sony store said) for Sony to get their act together. So I took a chance and bought mine from an amazon.com seller and lucked out, the seller was great and the drive was brand new in box. Ended up costing like $345 shipping included. So far it has worked near flawlessly with the firmware upgrade, and the only coasters I make are self-induced. Hope you find one soon.

Edit: Just checked amazon, seems like their sellers are all out.

  8. Actually, I bought 2, both from Best Buy. The first was for list price: $349 + tax. The second was just this weekend, w/ a 10% coupon...they had 1 left, so I was lucky. 349-10%+tax. I'm pretty satisfied with the purchase so far, but I new to this game, talk to me a couple months down the road.

  9. $271 w/ tax and shipping from Dell.com (11/02).

  10. $249 Dell. Definately their biggest blunder of the year, at least for those of us who actually received the drive.

BTW, the drive has worked flawlessly for me. I did notice the drive is a little noisy when burning cd's but is barely audible when burning dvd's.

I have one on order through my place of business, I've been promised one on or by the 29th of this month. Cost, which is about $280. I've been to CrapUSA twice, no dice.

  12. get them no prob at Sony, sony gives 1st grabs to everyone that buys direct from them 1st before they ship any out.

  13. I pre-ordered it from dell.com for 280 on Oct. 3. Today got another delay email from them. I will probably use my 10% off coupon for bestbuy to get it down to 340 after tax, if they get any instock.

  14. I got mine from Circuit City Oct 29th, 02 for $349.99 plus tax. There were 2 on the shelf and I grabbed one. Later the drive was alot less expensive, especially with the Dell deals, but at least I got mine then.

In retrospect, I've only burned 3 dvds from that date. Why? cause when I think about it, I can't convince myself to copy a movie just to watch again later. The last movie I copied on tape was over 1 year ago, and I still have NO wish to go back and watch it again. I guess same happens with DVDs. Maybe you guys can recommend some movies worth watching again.

$318 from PCNation.com. Great drive and the ability to burn any format is definately worth the wait to get it. I purchased mine in mid December.... For the best prices go to http://www.pricewatch.com ...

Just FYI, Sony.com shows 'Temporarily out of stock - Shipping date not available. We will notify you by email when this product has shipped. .'. So even Sony has them on backorder...

  20. I was lucky and found the drive in a store yesterday. They got 3 DRU-500A's and I was lucky to get hold of one of them.
It seems like the market is short on these drives, cos noone else here seem to be able to deliver it, or can tell when it arrives. Been hunting the drive for a month and finally I was lucky.
I wanna be bigger, stronger, drive a faster car...

  21. I live in the UK and I really want this drive.

I believe that NOONE in the UK has one in stock, which is amazing that doesn't happen much.

The fact that when it came out it was £245 inc VAT in the UK, and now people are quoting me upwards of £280 for this product.

Screw Sony, but hey i love their products
