  1. Hi guys. My setup is this ATI 128 pro - P4 Intel 850 board - 1.4G - 98SE - ATI mission control 7.1

Problem. When I check the "best" capture setting with ATI (Mpeg 2 8.00m/sec) everything goes fine, no frames dropped or anything but when I try to encode to SVCD with tmpgenc I get a " cannot open file mp2 or unsupported file" I downloaded the mpeg2 plugin in the tools section but quite honestly don't know what to do with it, I open it....click okay but no help. I'm trying to put my 10yr reunion on cd to pass out at our 20 yr reunion which is coming up in 2 weeks so time is quickly running out.

If I have left out any needed info please inform me and I'll post it asap

    Thanks, Andy

  2. Come on guys, somebody give me some ideas. Do you have to buy tmpgenc to be able to encode mpeg2? I don't mind buying it but don't want to only to have the same problem and $48 less cash.

  3. The problem with Tmpgenc is that it will not open mp2s as an audio source. Mp2's are the compressed audio format for S/VCDs. Since the audio is already configured, it would be counterproductive for Tmpgenc to deal with it.

You may import the Mp2 as an audio source if you go to the Environmental Settings and check off "Enable Multiplex with "mux://file name" . . ." however this will merely multiplex the audio in as you encode your video, it will not resample it in any way.

If you wish to re-record an Mp2 track, I recommend the besweet utility and guides at www.doom9.net or you and extract the mp2 to a wav file and then encode with tmpgenc.

I may have missed the question entirely and you may have meant m2v, which is an mpeg2 video stream. If this is the case, try opening it with DVD2AVI and then create a d2v project which should import into tmpgenc without a problem.

  4. Get a copy of DVD2AVI from the net (various versions are available but
choose one from the orig. author for less problems)

    - Run DVD2AVI
    - Open your mpeg-2 video file in DVD2AVI
    - Select save project as (to create a frameserver file *.d2v)
    - With Tmpgenc, open the filename.d2v file as the video source
and filename.mpa as the audio source
    - Adjust Tmpgenc settings or load desired template
    Transcode!

    Hope this helps

  5. Thanks guys. DVD2AVI worked just like you said. Picture quality is great, the class of 82 thanks you.

Question. What exactly did the dvd2avi DO anyway? It seemed that it extracted the audio file. If you pay for tmpgenc do you still have to do the dvd2avi thingy or does it do it all without that step? Any other SVCD hints you can give would be greatly appreciated. I've just gotten comfortable with VCD...SVCD seems to be a "different world".

    Thanks again, Andy

  6. Question. What exactly did the dvd2avi DO anyway?
It acted as a frameserver, sending each video frame in a
    compatable format to tmpegenc.

It seemed that it extracted the audio file.
It does.. this is more useful for DVD ripping however.

If you pay for tmpgenc do you still have to do the dvd2avi thingy
Your problem is not caused by tmpgenc, you possibly have not
installed the mpeg-2 codec in a way your system can use.

Take time to do more research - everyone has their own preferred
    method of making SVCD's.

  7. Thanks for the reply. You mentioned the MPEG2 codec for tmpgenc.....how do you install it. I downloaded it, opened it and it put a screen up with diff options but I had no earthly idea what to do next. I looked in the forums and how-to sections and found nothing. What's the trick to installing it? Sorry I'm such a newbie to this, thanks for your patience, Andy
