The source was also 512x384.

I was successful with the same settings but 480x480 resolution. Can I not burn an xvcd at a higher resolution? -
Hi,
this depends on your standalone DVD player. I do converting to 704x576 MPEG 1 PAL with 2500kb/s CBR and it plays well on my Sony S-325.
