Is there a good way to determine this?
Like, I have a movie that has subtitles on the bottom and I'm afraid that the subtitles might get cut off if I do it wrong ;-;

Your best bet is to use one disc and record several samples to find out which you prefer. I would suggest, though, Video arrange method = Full screen (keep aspect ratio).
Then again, you never gave any information about what program you were using, so I assumed you were using TMPGenc. If you are using one of the commercial bloatware packages you will probably find it impossible to have any control over this. 8)
