  1. I've gotten the hang of converting d/l files to VCD or SVCD, or just D/L bin cue files and burning them.

I have a JVC XV-S502 DVD Player - Its awesome - it is progressive scan hooked up by composite cables to my Digital TV - and it will play any bastardized XSVCD I throw at it, even play PAL encodes. My problem is that when I playback VCD or SVCD , a part of the picture is cut off on all edges. A full screen video will be obviously cut on all sides, while letterbox films are only apparent on the left and right. When DVD's are played back, this does not happen. Best example I can provide is the THX logo - off the DVD the rectangle fits perfectly in the 16x9 area of playback, but when I convert and burn the same sequence to SVCD, the left and right side of the blue rectangle disappear off the screen. If I Zoom out the entire image is present, but at normal playback it gets cut off. When I play it on the computer i cansee the entire image fine.

Is this a hardware problem ? Or an encoding problem ? Any help
    appreciated.

  2. I've got the exact same problem with a Sony DVP-535 player and still
am looking for a solution. However, I've tried something I found on a
    website ( http://www.geocities.com/svaussie01au/ )
stating that you should try to cut off 24 pixels from left and right and 30 from top
    and bottom.

Then I resized the mpeg to leave the above pixels empty and lo and
behold, the image on the TV was now complete.

As a temporary solution it's fine, but I'm still looking for something else,
so if anyone's got a clue...

  3. Ill try it with those numbers. It would be a real pain though to have to reencode every SVCD I d/l just to work right....

  4. Check out this, found it while searching with google:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%2Bsvcd+%2B%22cut+off%22&hl=en&lr=&selm=viba4ukkcfjh...4ax.com&rnum=8

Maybe helps, but here's what I did:

    source avi was 640x272,

with virtualdub added border to make size 640x360 (16:9)
fed this into TMPGEnc, specified source was 16:9 display and
chose as video arrange method (under Settings | Advanced )
Center (custom size): 446x576. This was perfect when played
    in my DVD player!

If you're gonna do NTSC, do the math first

    About reencoding, afraid so....

  5. Thanks for the info rid.

If every TV crops like that - I wonder why its not recognized as a universal problem and adjusted for in any encoding tutorials ?
