  1. Hello

i know there are a lot of topics about Dolby and that kind of stuff but i want to get things cleared up:

    1. What's the difference between Dolby surround and Dolby Pro Logic?

    2. What's the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS?

    3. What is the best quality i can get on a SVCD (Audio i mean) Dolby Surround? And what about all those sound effects? my friend has a Pioneer DVD player 5.1 system. can i make a SVCD whit a audio stream so i can hear different sounds from a speaker? i mean if somebody drives around with a car and i rip this DVD can i make it sound the same on a SVCD?

I use DVDx and LSX to convert but i select teh "Dolby Surround" option in DVDX, and on the pioneer system 5.1 the lowe tones on the subwoofer are to loud, how can i prevent this?

    greetings,

  2. Check this link

    http://www.turbodog.org/evans/covers/ViD/The_Fast_and_the_Furious(back)-ViD.jpg

it says: Dolby Digital on the back of the images, i heard this wasn't possible!!!

And what about playing a SVCD with Dolby Surround sound on a DVD player with only two speakers connected? i did this and it plays small sounds louder !!

  3. They are full of shit, Dolby isnt possible on VCD or SVCD. VCD audio is locked into MPEG2 audio layer 2 224kbps stereo. Dolby isnt on VCD or SVCD disc. And its impossible to make a disc using one, dolby is a commercial propertyand their encoders are like thousands of dollars and run on giant studio machines. They may have ripped it from a Dolby source, but it is NOT dolby anymore. VCD is a standard for all VCDs. They all have to have this type of audio, if they dont they are XVCD. Non standard and sometimes incompatible with players.

Yes, there is a lot of confusion on this topic (including the info in this thread)...

    1. What's the difference between Dolby surround and Dolby Pro Logic?
I strongly suggest that you go to the Dolby website and read the technical documents for more details... but:
Dolby Surround refers the method of matrixing in an additional centre and surround channels into stereo audio channels.

This is the encoding method only.

ANYTHING with two channels of audio can support "Dolby Surround" (including FM radio, audio CDs and VCDs and SVCDs).

Dolby Pro Logic refers to the decoding method only. It is the method by which Dolby Surround encoded audio can be decoded to L, R, C and S channels. "Dolby Pro Logic II" is a more advanced form of the decoding. Note, BOTH are DECODING methods. These terms should ONLY be applied to the decoding equipment (e.g., a digital receiver or speakers).

The "Dolby Surround" term should only be used on the encoded material only (e.g., audio CDs, or some TV shows).

Dolby Digital is completely separate from "Dolby Surround". Whereas Dolby Surround matrixes additional channels into the existing two channels, Dolby Digital has 5.1full discrete channels of audio. That is, 5 full audio channels and one low effects channel. The audio is "digitally encoded" (e.g., like MP3) and requires a dedicated "Dolby Digital decoder" for you to be able to hear the 5.1 channels. This form of digital audio is commonly used on DVDs.

    2. What's the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS?
They are different formats of "digital audio". Both can support 5.1 channels. DTS (digital theatre sound) is ?less compressed/less lossy than Dolby Digital audio and generally sounds better. On a DVD, however, it uses a higher bitrate.

Firstly, you can definitely put Dolby Surround on a SVCD or VCD. This is simply the matrixed stereo audio and is maintained well after encoding to MP2. This will only support L, R, C and S and it WILL NOT sound the same as on the DVD (which has 5.1 discrete channels). However, the effects are still quite pleasing.

The common methods of ripping a DVD (e.g., DVD2AVI or FlaskMPEG) will automatically downmix the 5.1 AC3 audio (i.e., Dolby Digital) to a Dolby Surround compatible stereo audio file.

Now, you can theorectically put 5.1 audio on a SVCD (but not VCD) as multichannel MPEG-2 audio. This is not Dolby Digital or DTS audio. It is not that easy to convert 5.1 AC3 to multichannel MPEG audio either. Even if you do it, most SVCD capable players on the market will not be able to output the 5.1 channels.

Realistically, the most that you can expect is to get Dolby Surround encoded audio (i.e., L, R, C, S playback with a Pro Logic decoder) from your S/VCDs. As I mentioned before, this still sounds very good.

  5. I've asked a similar question and basically go reemed and then I did some reading to find out all about it, So I'll try to explain to th best of my knowledge

    1. What's the difference between Dolby surround and Dolby Pro Logic?
ANSWER> dolby surround dates back the farthest and is slightly diffrent then pro-logic. Now pro-logic takes 2 channel stereo and decodes it to surround sound but the rear speakers are mono meaning the sound is the same in both rear speakers.exmple plane flies on right side of screen you hear both rear speakrs

2.What's the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS?
ANSWER>dolby digital the rear speakers are in stereo. example plane flies on right side of screen you only hear front and back on right side only, now as for DTS this is slightly diffrent from digital it some say the sound can go from right front to left rear. Another note is DTS is the only sound format that you mentioned that is NOT a dolby product

    3. What is the best quality i can get on a SVCD (Audio i mean) Dolby Surround?
ANSWER> you can only put stereo sound which can be decoded into doby pro-logic if you receiver i able to (most do).By the waythis is the question I asked bt in a slightly diffent way.

    Hope this helps
