    You can't burn an SVCD onto a DVD-R. When you put a DVD-R disc into your DVD player, your player will automatically look for either:

    * MPEG-2 files in full DVD specs (720 x 576 for PAL, can't remember what Never Twice the Same Colour is)
    * MPEG-2 files in half-D1 specs (352 x 576 for PAL)
    * MPEG-1 files in VCD 2.0 specs

    Most probably your player will refuse to read SVCD-compliant files (i.e. 480 x 576 PAL or 480 x 480 NTSC).

    Check out www.dvddemystified.com for answers to all your questions, or get a hold of Jim Taylor's brilliant book if you can.

  5. You CAN put SVCD files onto DVD-r (sort of anyway) see the guides section for how to do this. However many players will refuse to play them in this format.

    That was my point. Technically you can put whatever the hell you like on a DVD-R but SVCD-compliant files are not part of the official DVD specification and won't be played by about 99% of standalone players.
