I have tried numerous times to burn my first VCD, but to no avail. I initially had a DV file, which I converted to .mpg using Tmpeg. This .mpg file can play back fine. Then I used Nero's VCD profile to burn it to a CDRW (because my standalone DVD player can only accept this media).
The result is audio which has very frequent data blips and pops and video which looks like it is being run through a scrambler. You can just make out the video at the very top of the screen, but as you work your way down, the rest is all jumbled up until the last half which is all black.
Could you please give me some ideas about what to do with this?

I am having the same problem. I am encoding video to mpeg 1 using tmpg and buring a cd-r using Nero 5. I also tried using Roxio's CD Creator 5 and both programs act like the CDs burned without error.
I have a JVC XV 501 that claims to play VCDs. But when I put the disk in the player, it says, "No Disk." I see the data when I look at the VCD on my PC through explorer, but it will not play in my DVD player.
Any suggestions?-Kevin -
I'd like to add something else about this problem I'm having. Not only doesn't the VCD work in my standalone, but it also doesn't work on my computer (it is a pioneer dvd-rom) using powerdvd.
Suggestions please? Anyone? -
Sounds like either a bad source file or maybe you didn't use the right settings. Specify the TMPG settings you used so we can take a closer look as to what might be wrong.

Thanks for the reply. I have been using the project wizard in TMPEG, choosing PAL template under video-CD and then ok-ing it. Then I just specify the file and it starts encoding. I'm using Premiere 6 to edit. Are there certain settings that I need to use? I've just been using the DV-edit for PAL template, but I've also added some simple effects, like fading. Would this have any effect of the clip? Thanks for your help!

I've just burned another mpeg into VCD format, and the result was pretty bad. There were no effects on this, just straight capture from the camera, then drag and drop (with some cropping). I still have the pixelated glitches on the top of the screen, but now the rest of the screen is green and opaque.
Starting right from the beginning, am I capturing correctly? I open Adobe, specify as a project setting DV-PAL standard 48khz. Under capture, I choose movie capture. This gives me a DV/IEEE1394 Capture with the following settings:Compressor: Microsoft DV (PAL), Frame size720 x 576, frame rate 25.00 FPS, Depth: Millions, quality 100%. I then press play to start my camera then hit the record to capture footage I want.
After this, I drap and drop what I want into the project window. I sometimes crop the footage if I want certain parts of the capture. I then choose export timeline. Under the general settings -> file type, I choose Microsoft DV AVI, range=work area, check export video and audio and no embedding options. Under video, I choose compressor=Microsoft DV (Pal) and Pixel Aspect Ratio=D1/DV PAL (1.067). I have a bunch of other settings that I can't access. Under audio, rate=48000hz, interleave=1 sec and enhance rate conversion=off. Under keyframe and rendering nothing is selected and the lower field first is chosen. Nothing is changed under special processing. Then I name my file and it converts.
Does this sound right? Thanks for all this help! -
Whatever AVI-source you use, even when it's DV (DV is best quality, unless you use some extra encoder - which you shouldn't with DV).
I advise to cancel that wizard of TMPGenc.
Just 'load' a template and choose one for your target ('SVCD NTSC' or 'SVCD PAL'), if you're a newbie or starter I suggest you begin with 'VCD NTSC' or 'VCD PAL' while those are much easier to configure (you don't actually at all).
After loaded the correct template, open the video-source and if neccesay open the WAVe (or a MP2 if you got that one) too.
The hit 'start'.
When all went fine, you should 'test' the MPeG in MediaPlayer (if you're using Windows). If the audio seems to be synchronised in the entire movie, then start burning - better first use a RW-cd. Be sure to take the templates for VCD/SVCD - and not a standard CDrom !
Then you should be able to play those onto your dvd-player. -
Thanks for the reply. I just tried this, but it didn't work. Same result. I should also add that all my converted mpeg files work fine by themselves. I'm using Nero 5.5 and the VCD wizard to burn them. I have to use VCD because my standalone player doesn't play SVCD. I have also tried these CDs on my computer DVD player and they both have the same result - they play, but with all these glitches. I've even used mpegs off this tutorial CD I have that specifically said that they could be used to create a VCD. I got the same result. I have used about 4 different brands of CDRW and 3 different CDRs. I'm thinking, could this be the result of the extra files added to the mpeg on the disc to make it a VCD? Or, could the burner have something to do with it? I have an old JVC burner, which burns at x2 max.
Finally, is there a way I can trick Nero into "burning" but onto my hard drive? Basically, I want to test the "VCD" before actually putting it onto a CDR/W. All I can think of, is to burn the file then copy it, but that defeats the purpose, right?
Again, thanks for the replies!
