  1. I want to start ripping DVDs and making SVCDs from the rips. I have a slightly aged machine: AMD K6 233MHz, 32MB RAM (going to upgrade to 64), 40 GB HD, generic 1MB video card. Money is tight and I cannot afford to buy a new machine. Is it possible to use this machine to rip DVDs? If so, what are your recommendations for DVD drives? I've seen some on sale for $40 or so at the local CompUSA. I was just curious if brand mattered much.

    Thanks,
    Jack

  3. i bought this one. about two weeks ago or so at comp usa. does not work on my 300mhz with 385MB Ram. specs say 350MHz or higher. gives choppy picture and sound right because of slow processor. keep that in mind. but thats only on playback. will work fine for ripping at your processor speed but not for viewing. hope my rambling made some sense. =)

  5. I've got the Pioneer DVD-Rom 16x slot loading drive.
This thing rips dvd really fast 10x+ normally using smartripper. $60, got it at some small pc house.

    I use this with AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz, 512MB DDR ram, 2x60GB HD 7200rpm 2mb buffer, ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 32mb, Windows 2000 service pack 2, Asus A7A266 Motherboard

I'm going to get the Compaq 7000 with the DVD-R.
I only pay $50 +/- a month and thats includes the digital camcorder and authorizing software.

  9. I took the recommendation of Sefy and a few others and recently got the Pioneer 106s (16X, slot loading, SPDIF output). I love it so far. I recommend this or the Pioneer 116 (non-slot version, also now SPDIF).

i would have actually gotten the pioneer 304 scsi 10x model, but it would have been one hundred dollars after delivery.

it wasn't worth the extra 80 to get that drive, nor the extra 40 to get the 106

  11. Jack - you can rip with that machine, but I shudder to think at how long it will take to reencode to SVCD with it... My old PC is a K6 oc'd to 333 and it took a good 30-35 hours for a 2 hour DVD.
