Hello!
Some months ago I was curious about the newest h.266 (aka VVC) codec which is supposed to deliver the same quality than h.265 (aka HEVC aka x265) at lower bitrate. So I downloaded VVC Easy utility to create a test video. I had also added custom LAV filters with VVC support. However, I wasn't very much impressed with the result which took 10-15 more time to render than the HEVC version (without hardware acceleration) and barely had better quality with the same bitrate. Also I discovered that the custom LAV filters had problem playing some other formats due to incompatibilities, so I restored the original version that came with K-Lite codec mega pack.
Recently I read that latest LAV filters (included in latest K-Lite codec version) can also play VVC videos, so I tried to open that .mkv file I had made, but it wouldn't open. MediaInfo reported the video codec as Apple_Quicktime. Wrong! No wonder why it cannot be parsed properly by VLC or MPC-HC. I tried to change the codec to VVC using mkvpropedit tool (included in MKVToolnix). Now MediaInfo correctly reports the video codec as VVC, but still doesn't play in MPC-HC. I loaded the file in Avidemux and saved the video stream as raw. I renamed the .raw file as .vvc and associated MPC-HC with the .vvc extension. When I double-click the .vvc file it plays fine in MPC-HC, so there is something weird in .mkv parsing. Is there anything I can do to fix it so the .mkv file is parsed correctly and plays in MPC-HC?
Just curious.

Try muxing to mp4 instead -
It worked from the command line as described in your link (I copy it here for reference):
My raw video was in .vvc file instead of .266, but it worked too. I didn't have to rename it to .266Code:mp4box -add "video.266" -add "audio.m4a" -new "video.mp4"
Double-clicking the .mp4 file plays in MPC-HC without issues. It seems .mp4 is more compatible than .mkv Thank you. However I was wondering why it fails when I try to mux the files from My MP4BOX GUI. I know, it checks the video stream for known codecs and fails, while in command line adds it without checking. Can I disable checking in GUI?Last edited by spapakons; 20th Jan 2026 at 03:11.
