  1. I am looking for help to try to restore this video. Although I am not completely unfamiliar with the process, my knowledge is limited, as I do not know how to use avisynth or other programs. I would need help with this video. I have no problem with using IA or other programs to improve the quality, as long as it can be viewed properly.

Warning: the video may contain bright lights, so if you have issues with this, I do not recommend watching it.

  2. that file is flagged as interlaced, but isn't interlaced,... TDecimate could be used for the decimation.
(not sure how this ended up inside a mp4 container with this characteristics, if the source is a DVD)
IA? did you mean AI ?

Attached a sample, of what happens if one throws BasicVSR++ at it,.... (it's smooth, but maybe more watchable)

Perhaps it was my poor export in Avidemux. I ripped the original with MakeMKV.

Doesn't the mkv from Makemkv contain mpeg-2?
If so take a clip of it in Avidemux, leave video as "copy"
Set output format (lower left) to mpeg PS muxer

Strange thing is that the video isn't interlaced (or telecined); no combing artefacts when treating the file as progressive.
I suspect either MakeMKV or Avidemux messed up the headers or that DVD isn't even DVD compliant.

Depends what you mean by "restore".

Here's my attempt. By the look of the aspect of the drum, the video itself is 16:9.

The pattern is 123455, so it's AVISynth: TFM plus TDecimate cycle 6, remove 1. I added TemporalDegrain2 for noise reduction and then in VDub, some sharpening and resizing.

    Code:
    LWLibavVideoSource("D:\VH\RB1988\05.mp4")
    TFM()
    TDecimate(Cycle=6, CycleR=1)
    TemporalDegrain2(degrainTR=3,grainLevel=1,postFFT=0)
    Prefetch(8)

  7. @Alwyn: Why the TFM()? The source seems progressive to me.

  8. Could it be that this is PsF (progressive segmented frame)? So in other words - pairs of fields that are from the same moment in time? I've seen it on old U-Matic music videos before which essentially allows for a progressive frame but is still NTSC/interlaced compliant.

    Thanks, I'll try without TFM.

Agree, the frames aren't precisely the same.

  11. I decided to give it a try with just ffmpeg.
    I went back to .mpg.
I did not change the resolution.
The .06mpg has a lower frame rate.
    To me this looks better.
Partly because it slows the flashing lights some.
