  1. Hi,

I am trying to copy a VCD but the CD to CD copy software locks up
    while reading blocks.

I tried copying VCD to Hard disk, and then to CD-R.

I was able to copy the files from the VCD to hard drive. But when
copying to CD-R, here is the problem. One of the MPEG file shows a
size of 744MB, so the simple Windows' copy command bombs declaring
    insufficient space on target drive.

Clearly there is a problem with the size as there can not be 744MB in
one file from a VCD whose total size reported by Roxio CD creator is
    only 643 MB.

What is going on ? Can some one shed some light ? How do I copy this
    VCD ?

    TIA,

    Nice

  2. VCD and SVCD are burned in mode 2....this allows for about 100 more MB of space on the CD-R...hence, mode 2 burning allows for 800 MB on 80 min CD-R and 750 MB on 74 min CD-R

data CDs are burned in mode 1, hence they are restricted to the standard 700 MB on 80 min CD-R and 650 MB on 74 min CD-R..

keep in mind, only VCD and SVCD mpg can be burned in mode 2 (so don't think about burning audio or other types of formats using mode 2)

as for copy VCD, do you have nero? i've been told you can use the direct copy feature of nero to copy VCD directly to another CD....i would think it's best to have the original VCD in a CD-ROM and the target CD-R in the burner so you can burn/copy the VCD on the fly....i think this works...but i'm not sure since i haven't done this myself...

however, another way you can do this is to copy the avesq01.dat file (something like this) in the MPEGAV folder in the VCD to your harddrive, then you can use nero's VCD template to burn this dat file as a VCD

if nero is giving you problems about the .dat file, then you can use vcdgear to change the .dat file into a proper .mpg file (strips away all the extra info and headers at the beginning of the .dat file)..then you can burn the .mpg file using nero's VCD template

  3. I have had good luck copying vcd's and svcd's with CDRWIN. Nero doesn't always do the job.

  4. The video data on a S/VCD is written in MODE2 Form2. In this mode, there isn't the additional ECC (error correction codes) as in ordinary CD-ROMs so it is possible that there are some unrecoverable errors on your VCDs. This generally isn't a problem in video playback but can affect some programs if you are trying to do a disc copy.

Generally, the better CD copying programs can cope with this in one way or another. I suggest that you try Clone CD. It is probably one of the best CD copying programs around.

    Regards.
