I am a complete zero when it comes to techno stuff. I read all kinds of stuff and still can't figure it out. So maybe someone can explain it in infant terms for me.'
I want to watch a PAL region DVD on my Toshiba 2700. I tried the hack stuff and it will not play.
I am now trying to copy the DVD with AVS video recorder but will not know if that works for several hours from now.
What I do not understand is when it asks for 'input file name', I don't know which file to click on.
When I open the drive D folder it lists VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01.VOB, ETC
How can I tell which file I need to copy?

do you have step by step instructions on how to use it?
I downloaded DVDFab 6.
highlighted DVD to DVD
put in a pal coded disc.and clicked on start.
Once it was copied I put in a blank and copied the movie to it, (I think)
It will not play in my recorder/player.
I will try it again but this time I will highlightHD Deccrypter and see what happens.
I will let you know.
Right now it is copying the movie with AVS Video Converter6. This is taking 3 hours and it is still not done.

The only thing a ripping program will do is remove the "region coding" from a dvd, it will not convert from "PAL" to "NTSC"

Dvd's from different parts of the world are "region" encoded, region 1, region 2, region 3, region 4, ect.

You, as i, live in a country where the format is NTSC & is the norm.
PAL is the dominant format of England, autrailia, ect.
Where NTSC is the dominant format for the U.S.A, Japan, Canada, South American (the majority) ect.

If you "Rip" a dvd from over seas that is PAL format, all you are doing is removing the "region coding" but the video is still PAL format and you either need a DVD player that will convert the video from PAL to NTSC on the fly, a TV that will display a PAL format video from the dvd player output, or you need to do a very lengthy conversion from PAL to NTSC, if you want to keep the best possible quality and all the menus.

The best thing to do is buy a standalone player that will convert from PAL to NTSC on the fly, or watch them on your PC.

Many many options depending on what you want to do or how much $$ or time you want to put into this.

Nope.
Not unless you've got a DVD player that will play PAL DVD's, and either convert to NTSC output, or if not converting but outputting a PAL signal you have a TV that will display PAL (unlikely).
Don't get confused between Region Coding and TV Standards - they are not the same.

The region code is just a number on the disc that tells the player whether it is allowed to play the disc or not. For example, a region 1 player is not allowed to play a region 2 disc, only region 1 discs. There is a special region code, 0, which means all players are allowed to play the disc. Dvd Fab changes the region code to 0 when it rips.

Then you have the issue of video format: PAL (720x576, 25 fps) and NTSC (720x480, 29.97 fps). Most players sold in the USA (region 1) will only play NTSC discs. Most players in Europe will play both because region 2 includes both PAL and NTSC countries.

If you are lucky your player will play the PAL video once it has had the region code changed by DVD Fab. If not, you'll also have to convert the video to NTSC specs or get a player that is capable of converting PAL to NTSC on the fly. Most of the Philips players can do this (the DVP-5990 and 5992 for example). Or just watch the movie on your computer which doesn't care about PAL vs. NTSC.

Many players can also be "hacked" to change their region code with a few button presses on the remote control. Setting the player's region to 0 allows you to play discs from all regions. There are a few region 1 discs which will not play on a region 0 player so you may occasionally have to change the region back to 1. The Philips players above can be hacked via the remote control.

So there are players that will play both formats. This is what I am trying to find out about.

Philips 3980, 5140 and 5990 for starters. Look for them locally. They are cheap, easy to hack
and convert between PAL<>NTSC. BUT DO SOME RESEARCH FIRST. Companies love to change
specs for no reason at all.

I found the Phillips 5990 at Best Buy for $60 and a Pioneer 1080 at www.220-electronics.com for 89.
Guess I will needd to take a ride to Best Buy and check them out.

The Philips 5990 is pretty cheaply built but it is easily hacked for all region and it convert PAL to NTSC. It has a USB 2.0 port and you can Divx/Xvid AVI, WMV, MPG, and MP3 files from hard drive or flash drive. Picture quality and upscaling are decent. It's one of the first Philips to have a remote control that falls into the "adequate" territory. Earlier models had really crappy remotes.
