  1. Hi everyone, I have a video library stored on a 20T HD. They are in MKV/MP4 format with x264 and x265 codecs and mp3/aac/ac3/eac3 audio. Subtitles and chapters.
Since I can't afford to buy another 20T HDD, I wanted to make a lower quality backup on a 4TB HDD. I'm using windows 10 as a media streaming server for my home TVs. I wanted to know if there is a way to automate the backup/recoding procedure as much as possible.

I'm pretty good with dos/bacth and would like to do everything with this.

What tools do you recommend? Does a similar open source project already exist?

    Thanks.

Do you intend to convert all theese video files, with lesser quality to create smaller video files with as much automatation as possible for this one time backup or is the plan to create an automated backup+conversion to smaller file size and then include an transfer to this 4TB HDD that will then work with this automaticly after the first initial backup?

MystiQ Video Converter v.20.02.18 have really nice options to add multiple files and process them in batch mode, once an bunch of files have been added and customized, it is then possible to add more files and select other settings and then totaly convert all at the same time in one go! I tested the 64bit version and it worked fine, no watermarks added, H.265 Codec is avalible allso, alltough where i downloaded the 32bit (x86) and the 64bit (x64) version, the 32bit (x86) had 6 virus detections, so dont download the 32bit version!

If you want to automate things completely i think i have seen an video converter with an function to complete tasks in an selected folder automaticly, but i dont remember which one. (If you would happen to find such an program to monitor an folder and convert automaticly you could check out 'AutoVer v.2.1.1' which includes functions to to monitor folders and transfer files to an other disk or folder and allso to transfer the new files automaticly over the LAN or Internet to an file server aswell as settings for file versioning and restoring files from the backup and then back to the original folder, as far as i an tell it is allso possible to use this function with the file transfer function, which would transfer the backed up file right back to the original folder over the LAN or Internet, if needed, for example when noticing an faulty encoding or some unexpected error).

Edit: You can use 'AutoVer v.2.1.1' allso to select an folder to just backup the files manually to an new location allso, using the auto function is optional.

I'll add some details so I can reply to you. The 20T disk has a video folder with many subfolders that divide the videos into a certain category. They are already encoded with staxrip to look good on my TV and for my eyes. Every now and then I add one or more new videos.

The backup procedure (copy in case of failure of the 20T disk) must mirror the folders and names of the videos but before copying to the 4TB disk it must convert the video to a lower resolution and a lower bitrate , at maximum compression. (parameters that I would prefer to choose as automatically as possible, if possible). Furthermore, the procedure must always be running to detect new files and perform (conversion and backup of the convert to the 4T disk).

I would also like to try to automate the choice of bitrate, I know it is very difficult without viewing every single video. But since I already did this check before converting with staxrip maybe it's possible to avoid it. But I do not know.

Now I'll take a look at the programs you recommended. Thanks

PS.I would also like to have the ability to use the AV1 and opus codecs to compress even more.

PS2. The videos are in different resolutions so I would like to choose the new resolution based on the original size and not fix it for everyone. Furthermore, I would like not to go below a certain resolution/bitrate.

Yep ok, 'AutoVer v.2.1.1' is pretty nice to monitor an folder and transfer/copy files to an new destination, i tested it yesterday acctually and it is really nice and pretty simple to use and stay active now in my tray to monitor one of my video folders.. If you would want an program with a bit more features then 'AutoVer' you could check out 'FreeFileSync v.11.25' (which include allso 'RealTimeSync v.11.25'). Ill check around some programs for one who can automate the conversion but i seem to remember myself not needing the feature so i think i dont have the installer avalible.

I'm trying autover, unfortunately it doesn't install the help file.

Since I need to run the conversion batch, I don't know how to pass the parameter of the file name and destination directory.

However the big problem is not the directory mirror, nor do I need versioning.

The big problem is doing the batch conversion.

    PS. I have found documentation ie c:\apps\encodeit.exe -c "{0}" "{1}".

Yeah many programs are pretty poor on the name + destination things! If you're into automate things into this disk you really should concider using versioning, else basicly it means many unwanted events could have your backup overwritten.. one day or the other an faulty click or choice is made guaranteed and the backed up file is gone and sometimes the original source file allso... i basicly have 40-50 different locations for one installer, minimum, before even concider to transfer it to an backup hdd!

Unlucky with the help file, i checked my program and the help file is working over here with v.2.1.1!

I tried a conversion, but, although it is very flexible, it does not help me in choosing certain jobs. For example, after encoding, if I add files, those already encoded are reencoded. Furthermore, I can't understand the choice of screen size. I wish it was a percentage of the original. But not below a certain threshold. And other things

You're right, versioning is the only solution to avoid unwanted overwriting.

It seem like FFMpeg is the market winner and they have alot of support from many good people, i guess thats important to call it "complete" and it defenitely help make it easier to use with much nice people around to help out!

By CLI Versions do you mean were it is possible to edit the ffmpeg command line/arguments or where it is just basicly an command prompt, or is it an version of FFMpeg that can be used together with the Windows Command Prompt?

To controll the size and bitrate there are many programs, but if it is needed for the program to be able to monitor an folder and convert automaticly, im not sure, i found such an program before but i didnt plan to use it myself so im trying to remember where it was.

Thats cool, ive been doing some of that myself, im not very good at it! i know a few professional video converters that use only commands, i dont think even they use an program interface! When an real job appears i allways ask for their help in secret

Ok, i dont know how to use the command prompt with ffmpeg.. it seem very complicated, and luckily as of yet the video converters do an good job for me without it!

Yeah i think you can keep going here.. Probably someone know, they might not want to put the answer publicly here in the forum.. possibly they use thing for themself or as an part of their buisness or what they plan to create for an buisness/living so maybe if you hit up some way for them to reach out to you more private on your profile or something it can increase your chances? Atleast thats what i belive people do if they would have some sort of commands on how to do things, they might want to share it a bit private! When i got help from people with linux commands before they had all sorts of list on how to do things but once done with the task they removed the document from their website.. i seen this with commands for Windows allso

  22. OFF TOPIC: The forum message tools bar doesn't work for me. I opened a thread. And do manually...

I made the easiest part for me. This part is ready to replicate the directory structure automatically and also the management of new files.

The help I would need is the line of code to extract the video information.

I need Bitrate, aspect ratio, frame size. and instructions for use this parameters.

Then I need the ffmpeg command to reencode the file with the new values.

Then I don't know if I have to do the mux or whatever it's called... This is a doubt that came to me seeing how staxrip does it.

This is the code: for other people...
    Code:

    rem Main cicle

    For /L %%# in () do (

rem Create directories/folders Structure on destination disk.
rem If a directory already exists, it is skipped

    	call :create_folders "!Origin!" "!DestinationDisk!"

    	timeout -t 10

rem generate list of new files to recode

rem wait a minute for new files
