You say VirtualDub does not support 640*480 video capturing resolution. This is not true and I tried to capture using that resolution size myself on VirtualDub. I was unsuccessful due the demand on the CPU with excessive frame drop outs.

The resolution size was too much for the computer and is able to handle successfully on 352*288 as with most applications.

Virtualdub is not responsible for resolution size problems. It got nothing to do with Virtualdub, it is all to do with the default capturing program in the computer. For example, WinTV, Guillemot DVR or whatever the capturing program is used with the TV card or video card. The setting are fixed with the default application with the composite or S-video in drivers.

It all depends on the hardware you have and the drivers.

Check and see if your capture card is shown here:
    http://btwincap.sourceforge.net

If it is, then get the drivers from there.

You'll be able to capture at any resolution and frame rate.
