  1. I have a number of Sony hi 8 tapes which were recorded ages ago.
    They all have tbc shown on playback how do I get rid of it?

TBC is a playback feature, so unless it has been burned onto tape (which is extremely unlikely) it is being shown by your camcorder as an indication that TBC is turned on - you can turn it off, but normally you want to keep it turned on. When you connect the camcorder to a TV or another device like a video capture box via S-Video or composite, it will not be there. Well, it should not be there

    On the other hand, date and time is burned in during recording, at least on VHS. I know it because I inadvertently did it myself, thinking that I could turn it off during playback.

    Try turning off OSD from the camcorder options, TBC/DNR should stay on during playback. I have never seen TBC icon on any of the camcorders I used before, Is it that hard to post the model number of the camcorder?
