Could someone reveal for me how this is done?

Many ways. Any Non-linear video editor can take the two recorded clips on separate tracks and overlay them. It can be done in realtime on a computer with OBS or similar software. There are a number of switchers ranging from $300 up that will do it live as well.

Thanks, but your expert-style 'cueing' is not really helpful for a layman like me: It seems this cueing is meant to evoke some 'dontcha remember' response, but what if there's nothing for the recipient to remember? The only useful thing would be a complete how-to algorithm. And if not every editor can be used for it, I have Openshot installed. If this one can't do it, I would also have access to Shotcut, Davinci and Powerdirector.

You should have put that in your first post. How were we to know what software you are using, if indeed you had an NLE?

In any case, as smrpix says:

Read the Help info on any of the NLEs you have. I'm sure they can do PIP (Picture in Picture). Or Google "shotcut picture in picture".

Well, sometimes Google/YT are useful, sometimes they're not. This is probably the cause that they're no longer the undisputed go-to source for users seeking a solution to a problem.

I was slightly surprised about the tone in your answers. I wrote what appeared appropriate to me, contents and tone wise, so don't really know where I might have given cause for offence. But then this is not my native language, so I don't feel it like a native speaker. Did you take this into consideration?

Videomutt -- in Openshot, lay down your full frame video on video track 1. Lay down, resize and position your insert on video track 2. This is the same in every Non-Linear Editor -- as I said in my second sentence.

You gave no indication in your original post whether you wanted to do this live or in editing. No gotcha here -- trying to understand your question. (I also don't understand your use of the word "cueing," but I suspect we should leave that be.)
