what kind of .avi

There is word for so many video/audio formats, so.. I capture my .avi file from Sony DV camcorder. What kind of .avi file is this? What means Divx, DV etc.? I am using Pinnacle Express but I am not so happy. I want to convert my captured .avi files (by Pinnacle 1394 PCI card) using TMPGEnc and burn SVCD with Nero5580, but these file descriptions make me confuse. Can anyone with experience give me some advices?

On the left side of this page is a section entitled 'what is'. I suggest you read these pages thoroughly. If you are still confused try posting a more specific question. To answer your question properly would probably take several pages of text and I doubt many board users would be willing to spend that much effort on such a vague question when all the info is available elsewhere.
